Chapter 14 - THE CHILD THEY WERE ALL PROTECTING

Marcus arrived two hours later.
He walked into the basement, saw the open storage bin, and sat down without speaking.
Adrian remained standing.
“How long?”
Marcus rubbed both hands over his face.
“Seven years.”
Mara stared at him.
“You knew where Elena was?”
“No.”
“Then what did you know?”
Marcus looked at his brother.
“Olivia is mine.”
Adrian did not react immediately.
Then he stepped backward.
The photograph.
Marcus’s hatred toward his mother.
The secret payments.
His immediate recognition of Mara.
The clues finally aligned.
“Elena was pregnant when she left,” Marcus said.
“She told Mother first.”
Adrian’s voice was barely audible.
“Why?”
“Because I was engaged.”
Mara looked at him.
Marcus nodded.
Not proudly.
“My engagement was part of the merger with Prescott Holdings. Mother had spent years arranging it.”
“You were going to marry someone else?”
“I ended it when Elena told me.”
“But Elena disappeared first.”
Marcus looked at the floor.
“Mother convinced her I had chosen the merger.”
Adrian’s expression changed.
“You’re guessing.”
“No.”
Marcus reached into his jacket and pulled out an old prepaid phone.
“I found this in Mother’s things after she died.”
Messages.
Dozens.
Between their mother and Elena.
Promises of financial support.
Threats that Marcus would lose everything.
Warnings that the Cole board would accuse Elena of theft if she went public.
And one message that changed everything.
Marcus believes the child isn’t his. Keep it that way. It protects all three of you.
Adrian sat down.
Mara understood the rest before Marcus said it.
The supposed theft had not been invented simply to save the family company.
It had been used to force Elena away.
The payments were hush money disguised through vendor accounts.
Grant had helped create the accounts.
Daniel had unknowingly renovated the Tucson property where documents were concealed.
The folded photograph.
The rent Adrian secretly paid after Elena vanished.
The anger in Marcus’s voice.
Every strange detail pointed backward toward the same act.
Their mother had separated Marcus from Elena and his daughter to preserve a business alliance.
But one fact still did not fit.
Mara looked at Marcus.
“Why did the payments continue after your mother died?”
Marcus looked at Adrian.
Adrian went very still.
Mara followed his gaze.
“You knew.”
Adrian did not answer.
Marcus stood.
“Tell her.”
Mara felt something inside her go cold.
“Adrian.”
He looked at her.
“I found Elena three years ago.”
Marcus lunged toward him.
Mara stepped between them.
“Stop.”
Marcus stared at his brother.
“You knew where my daughter was?”
Adrian’s voice cracked for the first time Mara had ever heard.
“Yes.”
The major betrayal was no longer something their mother had done years earlier.
May you like
Adrian had inherited the secret.
And then chosen to keep it.
