Chapter 24 - THE MAN WHO HAD BEEN CLEANING THE BOOKS

Peter Vale came to work Monday morning.

Nobody confronted him.

For three days, Gabriel behaved normally.

That cost him more than anger would have.

Rachel could see it every night when he came home.

“What did he do?”

“Nothing.”

“That bothers you.”

“Yes.”

Peter attended meetings.

Approved payroll.

Called Gabriel “Gabe” the way he always had.

If he knew anything, he hid it well.

Then Rachel’s attorney found the first crack.

The email sent to Claire had passed through a privacy service.

But the attached historical pages contained metadata.

They had been scanned recently.

At Cross Development headquarters.

Using a machine on the executive floor.

Only twelve people had access.

Peter was one.

Martin was not.

Gabriel authorized a formal internal investigation through outside counsel.

That mattered.

No private intimidation.

No hidden punishment.

A documented process.

Peter realized something was happening by Friday.

He entered Gabriel’s office after everyone else left.

“You’re investigating me.”

Gabriel looked up.

“Yes.”

Peter shut the door.

“Why?”

“Sit.”

“No.”

Gabriel studied him.

“Claire received copies.”

Peter’s face did not change.

But his breathing did.

“What copies?”

“Old retirement transfers.”

Peter looked toward the windows.

Then laughed softly.

“You have no idea what you’re opening.”

“That’s becoming everybody’s favorite sentence.”

Peter turned back.

“Your father was going to prison.”

“Maybe he should have.”

“And your company was going under.”

“That wasn’t Claire’s decision.”

Peter stared at him.

“No. It was mine.”

Gabriel went still.

Peter had been a junior auditor then.

Twenty-eight years old.

Ambitious.

Terrified of losing his career.

He discovered the unauthorized transfers during an internal review.

Instead of reporting them, he helped Martin restructure the accounts so the missing funds appeared as construction receivables.

Claire found his work.

That was why she was blamed.

“She could prove it was you,” Gabriel said.

“Yes.”

“So you destroyed her.”

Peter flinched.

“I protected myself.”

“Same result.”

Peter looked older suddenly.

“But I never threatened her daughter.”

Gabriel studied him.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“You should.”

“Why?”

“Because I’m the one who sent her the documents.”

That was the twist neither Gabriel nor Rachel had expected.

Peter was not trying to silence Claire.

He was trying to force the truth into the open.
