Chapter 5 - The Blood-Bound Vow

The dress arrived at noon.

It was not a traditional white ballgown—there had been no time to fit one, nor would it have suited the dark, tense reality of our union. Instead, Mrs. Gable brought a breathtaking, champagne-colored silk column gown designed by a top Italian house. It draped over my frame like liquid moonlight, clinging to my curves before falling into a subtle, elegant train.

As I stood before the full-length mirror in the suite, two makeup artists finished pinning my dark hair into an intricate, elegant updo, leaving a few soft tendrils to frame my face.

I looked like a stranger. Gone was the hollow-cheeked, dust-covered woman who had been stranded on Highway 86 twenty-four hours ago. In her place stood a woman who looked regal, formidable, and dangerously beautiful.

"You look stunning, Miss Emily," Mrs. Gable said softly, tears glistening in her eyes as she adjusted the delicate gold bracelet around my wrist. "Like a true queen of this house."

I stared at my reflection, my heart hammering a frantic rhythm against my ribs. "I'm terrified, Mrs. Gable."

The older woman stepped up beside me, placing her warm hands gently on my shoulders. "Fear is natural, child. But I have served the Brooks family for thirty years. I saw Nathan grow up under the shadow of a cruel father. I have never seen him look at any human being the way he looked at you in the hallway this morning. He will burn the world to ashes before he lets anyone harm you or those precious children."

A soft knock sounded at the door.

Noah and Lily walked into the room, accompanied by a young guard named Leo who was dressed in a suit. My children had been dressed in matching formal wear—Noah in a sharp little black suit with a crimson bow tie, and Lily in a fluffy rose-colored dress with shiny patent-leather shoes.

"Mommy!" Lily squealed, running forward and wrapping her small arms around my knees. "You look like a princess!"

Noah stood back, adjusting his bow tie with a serious expression, looking me up and down. "You look nice, Mom. Is Nathan really going to be our... step-person?"

I dropped to my knees, holding both of my children close, my eyes burning with tears. "He is going to protect us, Noah. He is going to give us a safe home. All we have to do today is stand by him and be brave. Can you do that for me?"

Noah nodded solemnly. "He showed me the security room earlier. He has fifty camera screens, Mom. Nobody can sneak up on us."

I let out a wet, nervous laugh, kissing the top of his head. "Good to know."

At 1:55 PM, Leo guided us down to the central courtyard.

The courtyard was an open-air sanctuary built of dark red sandstone, surrounded by high walls covered in lush green ivy, with a rectangular reflection pool stretching down the center. Sitting in a wheelchair at the front of the courtyard, wrapped in a thick cashmere blanket, was Victoria, flanked by two private nurses.

Standing by the edge of the reflection pool, waiting for me, was Nathan.

My breath hitched in my throat. He was wearing a tailored black tuxedo that made him look impossibly broad, dangerous, and commanding. Standing beside him was an elderly, distinguished judge holding a leather-bound registry book. Arrayed around the perimeter of the courtyard, standing in formal black suits with white rose boutonnieres, were twenty heavily armed bodyguards—a surreal honor guard for a mob wedding.

As the string quartet played a low, slow melody, I began my walk down the sandstone path, my hand resting gently on Noah's shoulder, with Lily trailing beside me.

Nathan’s eyes locked onto mine the moment I stepped into the courtyard.

The dark, analytical look was gone, replaced by a gaze so intensely, breathtakingly hot that my knees felt weak. He didn't break eye contact for a single second as I approached.

When I reached his side, he extended his broad, warm hand. I placed my small fingers in his palm. His grip tightened instantly, firm and steadying, wrapping my cold hand in a vault of absolute warmth.

"You are breathtaking, Emily," he murmured, his deep voice meant only for my ears.

"You're not so bad yourself," I whispered back, my heart pounding violently.

The judge stepped forward, clearing his throat, his voice echoing softly against the stone walls. Because of the nature of the union, there were no fluffy speeches or long romantic readings. The ceremony was crisp, legal, and powerful.

"Do you, Nathan Alexander Brooks," the judge intoned, "take this woman, Emily Parker, to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, until death do you part?"

Nathan looked straight into my eyes. There was no hesitation, no flicker of doubt.

"I do," Nathan said, his baritone voice ringing out loud and clear through the courtyard, vibrating through the dark stone.

"And do you, Emily Parker," the judge continued, turning his eyes to me, "take this man, Nathan Alexander Brooks, to be your lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, until death do you part?"

I looked at the man holding my hand. I looked at my healthy, safe children standing beside us. I looked at the dying mother smiling peacefully in her wheelchair.

"I do," I said, my voice steady, clear, and absolute.

"By the power vested in me by the State of Arizona," the judge declared, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."

A sudden, intense silence descended over the courtyard.

I held my breath, wondering how Nathan would handle the performative kiss we had agreed upon.

Nathan didn't hesitate. He stepped close, his left hand coming up to gently cup the side of my neck, his long fingers burying themselves into the soft hair at the base of my head. He leaned down, bringing his lips against mine.

The contact was electric.

It wasn't a fake, polite peck. It was a deep, possessive, breathtaking kiss that sent a shockwave of liquid fire straight down my spine. His lips were firm, warm, and demanding, wrapping me in a sensory overload that made the courtyard, the guards, and the entire world dissolve into nothingness. I instinctively reached up, my hand gripping the lapel of his tuxedo, pulling myself closer to his broad chest.

May you like

When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against mine for a lingering second, his dark eyes were dark with an unbridled passion that left me entirely breathless.

"Welcome to the family, Mrs. Brooks," he whispered softly against my lips.
