Chapter 13 - THE HOUSE OUTSIDE TUCSON

The property sat behind mesquite trees and a rusted gate forty miles north of Tucson.
Adrian had not visited in six years.
Mara could tell.
Dust covered the furniture.
The pool was empty.
An old refrigerator hummed in the kitchen despite containing nothing except bottled water.
Daniel’s renovation invoice listed three rooms.
Kitchen.
Guest bathroom.
Basement storage.
“There aren’t basements in many Arizona houses,” Mara said.
“This one has one.”
Adrian unlocked a door near the garage.
Concrete stairs descended underground.
The storage room smelled dry and stale.
Metal shelving lined the walls.
Most boxes were empty.
Mara noticed something strange near the back wall.
Newer drywall.
Not new.
But newer than everything around it.
She touched it.
“Daniel did this.”
“How can you tell?”
“He hated sanding properly.”
Adrian looked at her.
Despite everything, Mara almost laughed.
Instead, Adrian found a hammer.
They did not tear down the wall dramatically.
They removed one inspection panel.
Behind it was a narrow cavity.
Inside sat a plastic storage bin.
No money.
No weapons.
No sensational secret.
Receipts.
Invoices.
Bank statements.
Medical bills.
And letters.
Adrian picked one up.
The handwriting belonged to his mother.
Mara read over his shoulder.
Elena, I can keep paying through February. After that, the board will notice.
Another.
You have to stop contacting Marcus. He believes you left by choice.
Adrian sat down on the concrete floor.
Mara watched his face.
“Marcus loved her.”
It was not a question.
Adrian nodded.
“He wanted to marry her.”
“Your mother stopped them?”
“I thought Elena abandoned him.”
Mara opened another envelope.
Inside was a photocopy of a birth certificate.
Child: Olivia Ward.
Father: blank.
Mother: Elena Ward.
Adrian stared at it.
Then Mara saw the date.
Olivia would be nine now.
Mara remembered the photograph.
The baby.
The payments.
Marcus’s anger.
Suddenly three separate mysteries became one.
“Adrian…”
His phone rang.
Marcus.
Adrian answered.
His brother spoke so loudly Mara could hear him.
“Where are you?”
Adrian looked at the papers.
“North house.”
A long silence.
Then Marcus said quietly:
“You found the box.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
“You knew.”
Marcus did not deny it.
May you like
And in that moment, Mara understood that Marcus had not come back to uncover the family secret.
He had come back because he already knew part of it.
