Chapter 20 - WHAT GABRIEL CHOSE TO BELIEVE

Gabriel did not deny it.

That was the part Rachel could not shake.

They sat in the library while Owen took Maisie upstairs.

Claire refused coffee.

Eva refused to sit.

Gabriel stood near the windows.

“When the audit started, my father told me Claire had altered accounts.”

Claire laughed bitterly.

“You were twenty-nine, Gabriel. Not twelve.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

Rachel watched them.

This was not old resentment.

It was unfinished damage.

Claire had discovered unauthorized transfers from employee retirement accounts into shell contractors.

Gabriel’s father claimed she had created the scheme herself.

A board investigation followed.

No charges were filed.

But Claire was fired.

Her professional reputation collapsed.

“She was pregnant,” Gabriel said.

Rachel looked toward Eva.

Claire nodded.

“My husband had just left.”

Gabriel continued.

“I paid her legal fees.”

Claire turned toward him.

“Secretly.”

“I was trying to help.”

“You were trying to feel less guilty.”

The sentence landed.

Gabriel did not argue.

Rachel finally understood the photograph.

The courthouse.

The baby.

The payments.

“You believed your father.”

“At first.”

“At first?”

Gabriel looked at the floor.

“Two years later, I found one internal memo.”

Claire’s face tightened.

“You found proof?”

“Not proof. Enough to know she might have been telling the truth.”

Rachel stared at him.

“And you still said nothing?”

His silence was answer enough.

Something inside her shifted.

Gabriel had helped rebuild her life.

Had treated Owen and Maisie as if they mattered.

Had stood beside her during every ugly month after her divorce.

But that did not erase this.

“You let her carry it.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“Yes.”

Claire stood.

“That’s why I didn’t come for forgiveness.”

She handed Gabriel a printed email.

“I came because whoever sent this knows Eva’s school.”

Gabriel’s eyes sharpened.

“How?”

“They attached a picture.”

Rachel felt cold.

Claire continued.

“They don’t just want the files.”

“What do they want?”

May you like

Claire looked toward Eva.

“To make sure nobody talks this time.”
