Chapter 18 - THE LETTER UNDER THE FRONT DOOR

Rachel Hayes found the envelope at 5:42 on a Tuesday morning.

No stamp.

No return address.

Just her name written across the front in black ink.

She stood barefoot in the entryway of the Tucson house while the desert outside was still blue with early light.

Upstairs, eleven-year-old Owen was asleep.

Seven-year-old Maisie had somehow kicked half her blankets onto the floor again.

And Gabriel Cross, the man who had pulled all three of them out of a life that had nearly collapsed two years earlier, was in the kitchen making coffee.

Rachel opened the envelope.

One photograph slid out.

Gabriel.

Much younger.

Standing beside a dark-haired woman outside a courthouse.

The woman held a newborn baby.

Rachel stopped breathing for a second.

On the back, someone had written:

Ask him why he paid her every month for nine years.

“Rachel?”

Gabriel appeared behind her.

She turned.

He saw the photograph.

The coffee cup stopped halfway to his mouth.

That reaction told her more than denial would have.

“Who is she?”

Gabriel looked at the picture.

Then at Rachel.

“Her name was Claire.”

“Was?”

“She’s alive.”

Rachel stared at him.

“And the baby?”

Gabriel said nothing.

That silence landed harder.

Rachel lowered the photograph.

“You told me there were no more secrets.”

“There weren’t supposed to be.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

Gabriel rubbed a hand across his jaw.

Before he could speak, Maisie appeared at the top of the stairs wearing one sock.

“Mom?”

Rachel turned immediately.

“What, baby?”

“There’s a lady outside.”

Gabriel went still.

Rachel looked through the narrow window beside the door.

A woman stood beyond the security gate.

Dark hair.

Gray coat.

Holding the hand of a teenage girl.

The woman from the photograph.

Older now.

But unmistakable.

May you like

Gabriel whispered one word.

“Claire.”
