"Maria?" Daniel called out, abandoning the safe and stepping out into the second-floor landing.
No response.
The overhead lights in the hallway flickered twice and then completely died. Total darkness swallowed the second floor, save for the pale moonlight cutting through the tall arched windows.
Detective Miller’s hand instantly went to his holster, drawing his service weapon with practiced silence. "Stay behind me, Mr. Reynolds. Someone cut the main power breaker."
"How? The breaker box is in the basement," Daniel whispered, his heart hammering against his ribs. "The police are downstairs!"
"Not anymore," a chilling voice echoed from the end of the dark hallway.

From the shadows near the guest bedroom stepped a tall, broad-shouldered man wearing a black tactical jacket. In his right hand, he held a suppressed pistol, the barrel pointed lazily toward the floor. It was Marcus—Vanessa’s imprisoned brother, who had somehow slipped past the perimeter unnoticed.
"Looking for me, brother-in-law?" Marcus smiled, his teeth gleaming white in the moonlight.
