Chapter 8 - The Housekeeper’s WarningDownstairs in the kitchen, Maria was pouring herself a cup of black coffee to steady her nerves when her phone buzzed on the counter. It was a text message from an unknown number.

She glanced at it, and the coffee mug slipped from her fingers, shattering into a dozen pieces against the tile floor.
The message read:
“You think you saved the baby, Maria? Look outside the window.”
Maria’s blood ran cold. She slowly walked to the kitchen window that looked out over the private driveway.
Parked just beyond the reach of the police cruisers, half-hidden under the shadows of the old oak trees, sat a sleek, black sedan. Its headlights flickered twice.

It was Vanessa’s brother—the man named in the fraudulent guardianship papers. And he wasn't alone. Through the tinted windshield, Maria could see at least two other shadowy figures sitting inside, watching the house like vultures waiting for a carcass.
They weren't here to rescue Vanessa. They were here to finish the job.
