Chapter 11 - The Secret of the PastDaniel froze, his hand hovering inches away from the detective’s gun. The air in the hallway felt thick, suffocating, and freezing cold.

"What did you just say?" Daniel growled, his eyes burning with a fury that superseded his fear. "What do you know about Elena?"

Marcus grinned, taking a slow step forward. "Oh, you still think Elena’s death three years ago was a tragic car accident, don't you? Such a sweet, trusting man. My sister Vanessa was always the master artist of tragedy. She didn't just want your money now, Daniel—she helped set up the brake lines on Elena’s car, too."

The world seemed to stop spinning. The blood rushed in Daniel's ears. Every memory of that terrible rainy night three years ago flashed before his eyes—the wrecked car, the police report, the grief that had nearly broken him. It wasn't an accident. It was murder. And he had married the monster who orchestrated it.

"You... you bastards," Daniel whispered, tears of sheer rage streaming down his face.

"And now," Marcus said, cocking his pistol, "we're going to clean up loose ends. Vanessa goes free on a technicality once our lawyers present the forged documents, and you and the baby... well, let's just say a tragic house fire makes for a very clean ending."
