Chapter 10 - The Standoff"Drop your weapon!" Detective Miller barked, stepping in front of Daniel and aiming his firearm squarely at Marcus’s chest. "Federal police! Drop it now!"

Marcus didn't even blink. He let out a low, mocking chuckle. "You think you're the only cops on this property, detective? Look outside again. Your backup is currently dealing with a flat tire courtesy of a nail strip on the main gate road. You're completely cut off."
Before Miller could process the threat, a heavy thud echoed from behind them.
Daniel spun around just in time to see a second intruder lunging out from the master bedroom doorway, swinging a heavy iron fireplace poker directly toward Detective Miller’s head.
Crack!
The blow caught Miller across the shoulder, sending the detective crashing into the wall. His gun flew from his grip, skidding across the polished floorboards into the darkness.

"Miller!" Daniel yelled, diving toward the fallen weapon.
"Don't move, Daniel!" Marcus shouted, snapping his pistol upward and aiming directly at Daniel's chest. "One twitch, and you join your first wife in the cemetery."
