Chapter 28 - A Father's Covenant

Deep inside the massive silo, Maya sat tied to the metal chair. Her small knees were bruised, her eyes red and puffy, but she wasn't crying anymore. In her small hand, hidden behind the folds of her dress, she clutched a small, sharp piece of jagged scrap metal she had picked up from the floor when her guard had been looking away.
She remembered what her father had taught her on the shooting range behind the manor.
*“If you are ever scared, Maya, you breathe slowly. You look for the exits. And you remember that your father will tear the sky apart before he lets anyone take you from me.”*
She saw the shadow of the tall, masked man—Alistair Kane—pacing near the edge of the open missile shaft. Beneath them was a sheer drop of three hundred feet into the dark coolant reservoir. Two heavily armed mercenaries stood guard beside her, their rifles slung low, nervous after hearing the distant explosions shaking the bunker walls.
"He won't make it," one mercenary muttered, checking his magazine nervously. "Anton had the rotary cannon. Nobody survives that hallway."
Suddenly, the massive pneumatic locks on the silo ceiling shrieked.
The main freight elevator cable snapped with a sound like a rifle shot. The three-ton elevator car plummeted down the central shaft, crashing into the lower staging platform with an earth-shattering roar that shook the entire silo. Concrete dust and blinding smoke billowed outward in a shockwave, knocking the guards off balance.

Through the cloud of smoke and fire, a lone silhouette emerged.
Maya’s eyes widened with pure, radiant hope. "Daddy!"
