Chapter 21 - Blood on the Tarmac

The private airfield on the outskirts of the state forest was shrouded in heavy, pre-dawn fog. Julian Vance did not walk toward the blacked-out Gulfstream jet; he moved with the grim, calculated stride of a reaper stalking through the mist. Every breath of mountain air burned in his chest, not with cold, but with the suffocating terror of Maya’s choked sob still echoing in his ears. Five hours and forty-two minutes remained on the encrypted sat-phone strapped to his tactical vest.
Two private contractors in unmarked gray gear stepped out of the hangar shadows, rifles raised at the low-ready. "Mr. Vance? Your transponder is unauthorized. Air traffic control has grounded all private corridors under federal directive—"
Julian didn't break stride. He stepped inside the lead contractor's guard, seizing the barrel of the carbine with his left hand while his right palm struck upward under the man's chin with concussive force. The man collapsed like a severed puppet. Before the second guard could disengage his safety, Julian had already pivoted, catching the second man’s wrist in a vise-like joint lock, driving him hard into the tarmac, and stripping the sidearm from his hip.
"Call your director," Julian said, his voice flat, icy, stripped of any humanity. "Tell him Julian Vance is airborne. If anyone sends an interceptor, I will bring it down over their headquarters."
He left the men groaning on the wet asphalt and boarded the aircraft. Inside the cabin, Marcus was already tapping furiously on three separate military-grade terminals. The screens were illuminated with topographic maps of the Appalachian mountain range, satellite feeds, and thermal imaging of an old decommissioned nuclear command facility hidden beneath Ridge Valley.

"The coordinates they sent you sit four hundred feet beneath Mount Mitchell," Marcus said without looking up, his voice trembling slightly. "The facility was constructed during the Cold War under Project Iron Gate. Sold off thirty years ago to a shell holding company linked to the Sovereign Cartel. Julian... that facility was designed to withstand a direct tactical warhead. It has only one surface ingress point and an emergency subterranean drainage tunnel. If you go in through the front door, you’re walking into a meat grinder."
"Then prepare the drop," Julian said, opening the primary weapon locker in the bulkhead. Rows of matte-black customized rifles, breaching charges, and ceramic armor plates gleamed under the red interior lighting. "I am not knocking on the front door. I am bringing the mountain down on their heads."
