Chapter 24 - The Chamber of Mirrors

Julian stepped over the bodies lining the corridor, stepping through the shattered blast door into what had once been the bunker's central communications hub. The room was massive, ringed with obsolete mainframe terminals and dozens of glowing monitors.
Every single screen was playing the same live video feed.
In the center of the display was Maya. She was tied to a steel support pillar in a cavernous industrial chamber, her white dress stained with soot and tears. Her small chest heaved with quiet, exhausted sobs. Standing beside her was a man wearing an immaculate tailored suit, his face obscured by a grotesque porcelain theater mask depicting a weeping demon.
"Daddy..." Maya's small voice came through the high-definition speakers. "Daddy, where are you...?"
Julian felt something tear open inside his ribs—a primal, wild agony that threatened to drown his tactical training in blind, reckless rage. He slammed his fist into the console, cracking the reinforced screen into a spiderweb of shards.
*"Careful, Julian,"* the masked man on the screen chuckled softly, resting a gloved hand casually on Maya's shoulder. Maya flinched violently beneath the touch. *"Her heart rate is already dangerously elevated. She was born with your late wife's fragile valve condition, wasn't she? A sudden shock... a minor electrical discharge... and she might simply slip away before you even reach this floor."*
"Touch her again," Julian spoke for the first time, his voice vibrating with such low, lethal intensity that the intercom speakers crackled with distortion, "and I will tear your limbs off one by one while you watch yourself bleed out on that concrete."
*"Bold words for a dead man walking,"* the voice laughed. *"If you want her, you know the way. The primary missile silo. But to get here, you have to survive my Vanguard. Remember Anton? The hound you thought you drowned in the Danube?"*

A heavy steel door behind the monitor bank slid open with an ominous groan. Out of the darkness stepped a colossus of a man—seven feet tall, clad in heavy titanium blast armor, holding an industrial pneumatic rotary cannon. Anton smiled, revealing steel-capped teeth.
"Hello, boss," Anton growled. "Let's see if you bleed as fast as you shoot."
