Chapter 19 - The Venom in the Well

The revelation hit Julian with the concussive force of an explosion. For eight years, Marcus had been his right hand, the man who stood by his side through corporate wars, political assassinations, and the tragic death of his wife. Marcus held the encryption keys to every safehouse, the override codes to every defense turret, and the biometric access to Maya's sanctuary.

"Why?" Julian’s voice was barely a whisper, his hand still holding the knife to Gabriel’s throat.

"Because men like you don't share power, Julian," Marcus said smoothly, raising his pistol and aiming it directly at Julian’s head. "You build empires on the backs of soldiers like me, and then you expect us to retire on a pension while you live in palaces. Gabriel was reckless, an amateur driven by petty sibling rivalry. But his distraction worked perfectly."

Gabriel coughed up another spatter of blood, a triumphant, sickening smirk curling his shattered lips. "I told you... brother... you lose."

With a swift, blinding movement born of sheer instinct, Julian didn't lunge at Marcus—he pulled Gabriel up by his collar, using his brother’s body as a human shield just as Marcus pulled the trigger.

The 9mm round slammed directly into Gabriel's upper back. Gabriel let out a choked gasp, his eyes widening in shock as his own co-conspirator's bullet tore through his heart.

Julian hurled Gabriel’s dying body toward Marcus, disrupting his line of sight, and threw himself laterally behind the heavy mahogany desk as Marcus fired three more rapid shots, splintering the oak paneling.

Julian pulled a flash-incendiary grenade from his belt, ripped the pin with his thumb, and bounced it off the steel ceiling.

"Cover your eyes, traitor!" Julian roared.

*CRACK!*

The grenade detonated in a blinding magnesium flare and concussive roar. Marcus shielded his face, grunting in disorientation as white-hot sparks showered the room.

Julian burst from behind the desk like an apex predator, tackling Marcus with savage, unstoppable fury. The two men crashed through the heavy plate-glass window, shattering the thick glass and tumbling out onto the blizzard-swept steel exterior deck.

Freezing winds tore at their clothes as they traded brutal, bone-crushing blows on the icy deck. Marcus threw a vicious elbow that caught Julian across the temple, opening a jagged gash, but Julian absorbed the blow without flinching. Paternal adrenaline surged through Julian's veins, converting his agony into pure, unadulterated violence.

Julian grabbed Marcus's weapon arm, twisted it until the radial bone snapped with a sickening *crack*, and ripped the pistol from his grip. Marcus screamed in pain, dropping to one knee on the slick metal plating.

Julian stood over his former friend, chest heaving in the sub-zero storm, blood dripping from his temple onto the white snow. He pressed the barrel of Marcus's own weapon against the bridge of the traitor’s nose.

"The codes," Julian snarled, his voice a monstrous vibration that cut through the howling blizzard. "Tell me you didn't give them the master override to the nursery."

Marcus looked up, blood trickling from his lips, his shattered arm hanging limp at his side. Despite the agony, a cold, mocking grin touched his eyes.

"Thirty minutes ago, Julian," Marcus wheezed into the wind. "The breach team entered the estate through the service tunnels. They didn't even have to fire a shot. Sarah fought back, of course... but she’s just one woman against twelve."

Julian’s soul shattered into a million pieces. "Is Maya alive?!"

"For now," Marcus whispered. "She’s being flown to the primary extraction point. You’ll never find her, Julian. The men holding her don't belong to Gabriel. They belong to—"

Julian didn't let him finish the sentence. He pulled the trigger.

Marcus's body slumped backward into the snow, lifeless eyes staring blankly up into the raging Arctic storm.
