Chapter 22 - The Iron Perimeter

The transport aircraft skimmed just fifty feet above the dark, jagged canopy of the Appalachian pines, masking its radar signature beneath the terrain clutter. Julian stood at the rear cargo ramp, wearing high-altitude tactical gear, the biting wind whipping against his visor. The altimeter on his wrist flashed amber: *1,200 FEET. DROP IN 3... 2... 1...*
Julian stepped into the abyss.
The drop lasted less than forty seconds before the micro-chute deployed with a muffled snap, decelerating his descent into the thick pine needles. He cut the risers the instant his boots struck the frozen mud, rolling into the cover of a granite outcrop. Night-vision optics flared to life, painting the pitch-black forest in eerie shades of phosphor green.
Three miles ahead, buried beneath a false timber mill, the subterranean bunker breathed. Julian could see the heat plumes rising from disguised industrial ventilation shafts scattered across the ridge. But the perimeter was far from unguarded. Infrared tripwires crisscrossed the trees, and automated sentry drones buzzed softly like mechanical hornets above the tree line.
He checked his timer. *04:18:22.*
Through his suppressed sniper rifle’s thermal scope, Julian picked up five distinct heat signatures pacing along the outer razor-wire fence. These were not the street thugs Gabriel had hired. These men moved with synchronized military precision—tight spacing, sweeping arcs of fire, combat helmets fitted with digital uplink relays. They were the remnants of the Red Talon Legion, the mercenary company Julian had eradicated a decade prior.

*They survived,* Julian thought, his jaw clenching until his teeth ached. *They didn't just survive. They took my daughter to drag me back into the furnace.*
He squeezed the trigger. The suppressed whisper was swallowed by the mountain wind. The lead scout dropped without a sound. Julian shifted three degrees left, squeezed again. The second sentry fell before the first body even settled into the brush. Moving like a wraith, Julian closed the distance, his combat blade clearing the remaining sentries in thirty seconds of absolute, silent butchery. He bypassed the biometric gate by severing the relay junction with a thermite pencil, slipping into the dark subterranean stairwell just as the alarm network registered the breach.
