Chapter 13 - The Wolves at the Gate

A thunderous crack of lightning split the midnight sky above the Vance estate, casting jagged, violent shadows across the manicured lawns. Rain lashed against the armored, bulletproof glass of the second-story windows in torrential sheets.

Inside the nursery, Maya sat on the Persian rug, surrounded by colored pencils, completely oblivious to the war mobilizing around her. Beside her sat Sarah, a tier-one combat medic and Julian’s most trusted female operative, who was smiling warmly while discreetly keeping her right hand rested on the grip of her concealed Glock 19.

"Look, Sarah," Maya said proudly, lifting a sheet of heavy drawing paper. "I drew Daddy as a dragon with big golden wings, so he can burn all the bad monsters."

Sarah’s heart ached for the little girl. She leaned down, gently tucking a stray curl behind Maya’s ear. "He is definitely a dragon, sweet girl. The biggest one there is."

Suddenly, the lights throughout the 20,000-square-foot mansion flickered and died, plunging the estate into absolute blackness.

A heartbeat later, the backup emergency generators kicked in with a low, rumbling hum, bathing the corridors in a dull, tactical red illumination. Over the comms earpiece in Sarah’s ear, static exploded, followed by a frantic burst of gunfire and a dying scream.

*"Breach! Southern perimeter wall breached! They’re not using suppressed weapons—they’re using heavy ordnance! Team Three is down! Repeat, Team Three is—"*

A concussive explosion rattled the foundation of the house. Maya shrieked, dropping her crayons and throwing her hands over her ears as the floor trembled beneath them.

"Sarah! Sarah, what was that?!" Maya cried, tears springing instantly to her wide, terrified eyes. The paralyzing trauma from her weeks of captivity rushed back in an overwhelming tidal wave. "The bad men! They're back! Daddy said they were gone!"

"Maya, listen to me!" Sarah shouted over the blaring klaxons, scooping the little girl into her arms with military precision. She sprinted toward the hidden walk-in vault disguised behind the oak bookshelf. "Your daddy is on his way! You are going into the safe room, do you hear me? Nobody gets through that door!"

Downstairs, the grand entryway shattered inward.

Six men in full thermal-camo tactical gear stormed through the pulverized oak double doors. They moved in perfect flanking formations, weapons raised, sweeping the cavernous foyer with ruthless efficiency. They didn't look like common mercenaries; they had the rigid discipline of black-ops specialists.

"Secure the package," the point-man barked through his respirator. "Kill anyone else on sight. Gabriel wants the girl unblemished."

Before the men could advance toward the grand spiral staircase, the rear kitchen doors exploded off their hinges.

Julian arrived like a wrathful specter emerging from the underworld. He didn't take cover. He strode into the red-lit foyer wielding a customized Benelli M4 tactical shotgun. The first mercenary barely turned his weapon before Julian pulled the trigger.

The blast of twelve-gauge buckshot pulverized the operative's chest plate, throwing his lifeless body backward across the marble floor like a ragdoll. Julian pumped the action without breaking stride, firing again. The second mercenary took a direct hit to the shoulder, spun violently, and collapsed in a spray of bright arterial red.

The remaining four operatives immediately directed their fire at Julian, filling the hall with a deafening roar of automatic rifle fire. Julian dove behind a massive marble Corinthian column as marble chips showered down like shrapnel.

"You came into my home!" Julian’s roar echoed over the gunfire, deep, guttural, and terrifying. "You touched my child! You will not leave this earth in one piece!"

Julian drew two flashbang canisters from his vest, pulled the pins simultaneously with his teeth, and hurled them across the foyer.

A blinding white light accompanied by a 170-decibel shockwave detonated in the center of the hall, disorienting the invaders. Julian rolled out from behind the pillar, combat knife in his left hand, pistol in his right. He closed the distance in a blur of lethal speed.

He fired two rounds into the third man's visor, then lunged into the fourth, driving the six-inch serrated blade upward beneath the man’s tactical helmet, straight into the brainstem. The operative dropped instantly.

Julian grabbed the dead man's carbine mid-fall, brought it up with terrifying fluidity, and put three rounds through the chest of the fifth operative.

The sixth man—the squad leader—lunged forward, tackling Julian against the shattered remains of a priceless antique table. The two men crashed to the floor, rolling in broken wood and glass, fighting for control of a sidearm. The leader gouged his fingers toward Julian's eyes, but Julian’s paternal rage was a force of nature.

Julian headbutted the man with crushing force, shattering his tactical goggles, then wrapped both hands around the operative's throat, lifting him off the floor and slamming him against the wall until the man’s eyes rolled back in asphyxiation.

Julian stood panting amidst the carnage, his face streaked with sweat, gunpowder, and the blood of his enemies. He cast the limp leader to the ground, stepping on his throat just hard enough to keep him pinned.

"Where is Gabriel?" Julian snarled, his barrel pressed directly against the man's forehead.

The mercenary choked on his own blood, a sickening, broken smile spreading across his lips. "He's... already... where you can't reach him, Julian. Look at your phone."
