Chapter 15 - A Ghost from the Ashes

The high-altitude research clinic of Saint-Moritz sat perched atop a craggy, snow-covered alp like an eagle's nest, accessible only by a single private funicular railway and a secure helipad. Outside, a blizzard was howling, whipping blinding white snow against the clinic's reinforced tinted windows.

Julian stepped off the private elevator on the sub-basement level, flanked by Marcus. Julian wore a heavy black wool overcoat, his hands buried deep in the pockets, concealing twin silenced pistols. His face was drawn, pale, the stubble along his jawline sharp as steel wool. He hadn't slept in forty-eight hours.

Sitting behind a pristine white acrylic desk was Dr. Aris Thorne, a world-renowned geneticist who had spent decades catering to the illicit medical whims of European royalty and transnational oligarchs. When Thorne saw Julian Vance walk through his secure doors unannounced, the color drained from his face so fast he looked like a corpse.

"Mr... Mr. Vance," Thorne stammered, his fingers trembling as he slowly pushed his glasses up his sweat-slicked nose. "This floor is restricted. We were not informed of your arrival."

Julian didn't break stride. He reached the desk, planted both hands on the smooth white surface, and leaned in until he was inches from the doctor’s terrified eyes.

"Seven years ago," Julian said, each word deliberate and razor-sharp. "A woman named Sarah Vance had genetic sequencing performed in this facility. Gabriel Vance retrieved those records last week."

Thorne swallowed hard, his eyes darting toward the silent alarm button mounted beneath the desk.

"Touch that switch," Marcus murmured from behind, thumbing the hammer back on his sound-suppressed pistol, "and you’ll be dead before the signal clears the router."

Thorne pulled his hands back, holding them up in surrender. "Julian... please. You don't understand the forces at play. Your brother... Gabriel didn't die in Singapore. He was taken. He was rebuilt by the Consortium. He’s not the man you remember. He has resources that dwarf even your conglomerate."

"I don't give a damn about his money," Julian snarled, his hand snapping out to grab Thorne by his silk necktie, dragging the doctor halfway across the desk. "The test results. Did Gabriel alter them, or did Sarah carry his child?"

Thorne shut his eyes, tears of terror leaking down his wrinkled cheeks. "Gabriel paid fifty million dollars to forge the digital archives! He had our lead technician execute a synthetic splice into the global hospital registry!"

Julian’s breath shuddered. "Why?"

"Because he knows you!" Thorne cried out, gasping for breath against the tightening tie. "He knows the only thing on earth that could stop Julian Vance from burning the world to ashes was doubt! He wanted to poison your mind! He knew if you looked at that child and saw him instead of yourself, you would hesitate! He wanted to break your spirit before he took your empire!"

Julian’s grip slowly loosened. The doctor collapsed back into his ergonomic leather chair, wheezing and clutching his bruised throat.

A wave of profound, devastating clarity washed over Julian. The cruelty of it was monstrous, perfectly calibrated to strike at the deepest insecurities of a father who had spent years buried in corporate warfare while his wife suffered in silence. Gabriel hadn't just attacked Maya physically; he had weaponized the memory of Julian's deceased wife to turn Julian’s love into poison.

"Where is he, Thorne?" Julian asked, his voice returning to that terrifying, subterranean calmness that signaled absolute devastation for whoever stood in his path.

"He chartered a private icebreaker," Thorne whispered frantically. "The *Vanguard-Nine*. It’s anchored off the coast of Svalbard, in international waters. He’s waiting for the delivery team to bring Maya to him. He doesn't know your security team wiped out his strike force yet!"

Julian pulled out his encrypted radio. "Marcus."
