Chapter 23 - The Architecture of Malice

The descent into the bunker felt like stepping into the throat of hell. Damp concrete walls, sweating with mineral deposits and rust, stretched downward in an endless spiral staircase. Julian moved down three flights at a time, each step soundless, weapon tucked tightly into his shoulder pocket.

The comm-link in his ear hissed with static before a modulated voice broke through the channel.

*"Impressive time, Julian,"* the mastermind purred. The voice was coming through the bunker's intercom speakers mounted along the walls. *"You cleared the perimeter scouts in less than two minutes. Just as lethal as the night you slaughtered the council in Geneva. But tell me... does that trembling hand hold the rifle as steadily when you know your little girl is chained to an iron chair just two levels below you?"*

Julian didn't answer. To speak was to give away his breathing rate, his psychological state, his focus. He pressed forward, scanning corners with cold discipline.

*"She cried for you, you know,"* the voice continued, smooth and mocking. *"She kept asking why Daddy broke his promise. You told her you'd come home to plant roses, didn't you? What a quaint lie. A monster playing house with a doll. But blood always calls to blood, Julian. You can never wash away what you are."*

Julian reached the primary blast door of Sub-level Two. The massive steel slab was sealed tight, but the hydraulic locks had been overridden from the inside. Suddenly, the overhead lights flickered from dim yellow to blinding crimson.

A heavy mechanical clatter resonated above him. From the ceiling grates, smoke canisters deployed, flooding the narrow corridor with dense, choking white phosphorus gas. From the opposite end of the hallway, heavy boots stomped into position.

"Kill the target! No mercy!" a voice bellowed through the smoke.

Muzzle flashes strobed through the fog like lightning in a storm. Julian dropped flat, sliding beneath the first burst of automatic fire, and brought his weapon up. He didn't fire blind; he fired at the thermal beacons of their weapon muzzles. Round after round struck with devastating accuracy. The hallway transformed into a roaring tunnel of fire, lead, and screaming ricochets.
