Chapter 99 - The Verdict of the Scriptorium

Every camera in the chamber swung toward us. The diplomatic observers stood up from their velvet benches in utter pandemonium.

I placed the titanium cylinder directly onto the High Bailiff's desk. Beside it, Clara gently laid my infant daughter, wrapped in the royal woolen blanket bearing the silver thread of the Vane crest.

"I present to this Sovereign Tribunal the legitimate, unbroken heir to the Vane Estate," I declared, my voice resonating off the ancient limestone vaults. "And I present the primary ledger, authenticated by the biological key, exposing the systematic conspiracy to murder my family and loot fourteen billion dollars from sovereign reserve funds."

The Chief Arbiter, an elderly Swiss jurist whose reputation for uncompromising neutrality was legendary, pushed his spectacles up his nose. He took the cylinder, slid the master interface into the court's sovereign terminal, and allowed the holographic projection to bloom across the center of the hall.

Lines of financial routing, bank transfers bearing Margaret Arnault's private cryptographic signature, and recorded intercepts of the hit teams at Constance flooded the screens overhead.

The room erupted into an uproar. Several of the bankers on the tiers backed away from Margaret as though she were radioactive.

"This is forged!" Margaret shrieked, losing her aristocratic composure for the first time in her life. "He is an exile! He murdered my daughter!"

"Your daughter died trying to stop you from killing her child!" Clara cried out, her voice cutting through the hall like a razor. She stepped forward, pointing an accusing finger at the matriarch. "Your daughter hid the sovereign ledger in her handbag because she knew you would sacrifice your own bloodline for an account number!"

The Chief Arbiter studied the glowing ledger. His face hardened like carved marble. He raised his heavy gavel and struck the bronze plate three times.

The sound resonated like a death knell.

"The claim of the heir is confirmed," the Arbiter announced, his voice echoing in the dead silence that followed. "The Vane Estate is placed under sovereign wardship until the child's majority. Duchess Margaret Arnault, by the authority of this court, your assets are frozen immediately, and an international warrant is issued for your arrest on charges of high treason, grand embezzlement, and murder."

Two Swiss federal police officers, who had been stationed at the sanctuary doors, stepped forward with iron cuffs. Margaret stumbled backward, her face as white as the snow falling outside the stained-glass windows.

We had won. The lineage was secure. My daughter was no longer an exile.

Or so I believed for one brief, shining second.
