Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Files

I walked briskly down the familiar corridor toward my private home office, the heavy silver flash drive heavy in my palm. Behind me, I could hear Victoria shouting for her bridesmaid, demanding that someone unlock the front doors so she could escape. But I had instructed the security staff to lock the estate gates and hold all exits. Nobody was leaving until I understood the nightmare unfolding beneath my roof.

I sat down at my mahogany desk, switched on my desktop computer, and slid the flash drive into the USB port. A moment later, a folder icon appeared on the screen, labeled simply: For Daniel.

My hand hovered over the mouse. Victoria’s words echoed in my mind—Your perfect little world is going to burn to the ground. Was she bluffing, trying to deflect guilt by smearing a dying woman's memory? Or was there something hidden in these digital files that would shatter every foundational truth of my life with Sarah?

I double-clicked the folder. Inside were three items: a PDF document titled Financial_Audit_2024.pdf, a recorded audio file dated three weeks before Sarah’s passing, and a short video clip.

My cursor hovered over the audio file first. I clicked play.

Sarah’s voice filled the quiet study, weak and raspy from illness, yet carrying an urgency that made my skin prickle.

“Daniel, if you're listening to this, it means I couldn't tell you face-to-face, or worse, I ran out of time. Two days ago, I caught Victoria—yes, the woman who runs the local heritage foundation downtown—accessing our private accounts using login credentials she somehow stole from my laptop during her visit. She’s not who she says she is, Daniel. Her real name isn't Victoria Vance. It's Victoria Sterling, and her family lost everything in the corporate scandal involving my father’s firm five years ago. She blames our family for her father’s ruin. She didn't bump into you by accident at that gala, Daniel. She engineered the entire meeting.”

The breath rushed out of my lungs. I gripped the edges of the desk so hard my knuckles turned white. Victoria Sterling? The daughter of Arthur Sterling, the disgraced executive who had embezzled millions from my late father-in-law's enterprise before fleeing the country and dying in disgrace?

I clicked open the PDF document. Page after page of meticulous financial records scrolled down the screen, detailing unauthorized wire transfers, hidden shell companies, and systematic asset diversion coordinated over the past fourteen months—right underneath my nose, while Victoria and I were planning our wedding and merging our households. She hadn't just wormed her way into my heart; she had been systematically positioning herself to drain my estate dry and dismantle my family holding company from the inside out.

And Lily had been standing in her way. Because Lily, despite her young age, had remembered Victoria visiting her mother's bedroom months before Sarah passed away—visiting when Victoria claimed she had never even set foot in our home.

Before I could process the full scope of the deception, a sharp knock sounded at my office door. Without waiting for an invitation, the door pushed open, revealing Mrs. Gable. Her face was pale, her eyes wide with fresh panic.

“Mr. Daniel,” she whispered, wringing her hands in her apron. “You need to come down to the security monitor room right now. One of the catering staff just tried to slip out the side kitchen exit, and when our guard stopped him, he dropped his bag. You... you need to see what he was carrying.”
