Chapter 95 - The Crypt at St. Gallen

The barge deposited us at a secluded industrial wharf on the southern shore of the lake an hour before sunrise. Under the cover of a blinding blizzard that swirled off the water, a battered diesel ambulance provided by the captain’s network transported us through the narrow, snow-choked mountain roads toward the historic city of St. Gallen.

Evelyn was pale, her fever rising from the bullet graze, but she refused to stop. "I spent six years watching them manipulate your life, Julian," she whispered, her fingers cold against mine. "I won't let them take that child's birthright. Not after everything we bled for."

The Abbey of St. Gallen loomed like a fortress of dark sandstone against the pale grey dawn. Its twin spires pierced the snowy mist, ancient and impenetrable. Beneath this UNESCO sanctuary lay the famed monastic library and the subterranean crypts—neutral ground under centuries-old European treaties where neither Swiss police nor corporate security could legally bear arms.

We entered through the western tradesman's gate, guided by an archivist whose family had owed an ancient debt of honor to my grandfather.

The vaulted stone corridors smelled of beeswax, aged parchment, and damp granite. Deep below the grand library, we were led into the Hall of Seven Sarcophagi—a subterranean crypt lit only by flickering iron sconces.

"The Tribunal convenes in the Chapter Hall directly above us at seven sharp," the archivist whispered, nervously glancing at the vaulted ceiling. "The Arnault lawyers have arrived with a battalion of private security. They control all surface entrances. If you try to walk up the grand stairs, their men will shoot you and claim it was self-defense against an armed fugitive."

"There is another way up," Clara said, stepping forward. She laid the floral handbag on an ancient stone tomb. "The handbag's clasp isn't just an encryption device. Julian, look at the base."

She reached inside the lining and pressed two concealed brass studs simultaneously. The reinforced bottom of the handbag clicked, snapping outward to reveal an intricate key forged from tarnished bell-metal—its teeth carved in the unmistakable shape of an abbey crest.

"This is the master key to the hidden liturgical hoist," Clara revealed, her breath misting in the cold crypt. "It leads straight into the floorboards behind the High Chancellor's dais."
