Chapter 92 - The Bargain on the Ice Shelf

The catwalk beneath the bridge deck was barely three feet wide, a suspended grid of perforated steel coated in slick black ice. Below us, sixty feet straight down, the icy waters of Lake Constance's river neck churned in violent black whirlpools, choked with jagged floating ice floes.

Evelyn collapsed onto her knees, panting, the cold air rasping in her throat. Clara was already huddled against a concrete pylon, inspecting the swaddling around the twins. Both babies were miraculously quiet, stunned by the cold or sensing the mortal terror surrounding them.

Above our heads, heavy combat boots stomped across the metal road deck. Voices barked in German and French. They were cutting through the hatch with a thermal torch; sparks were already raining through the seams like molten gold.

"They'll be down here in two minutes," I said, tearing strips from my own shirt to bind Evelyn's shoulder wound tightly. She groaned as I pulled the knot taut, her fingers digging into my forearm with surprising strength.

"Julian... the bag," she rasped, pointing toward Clara.

Clara unzipped the water-resistant lining of the floral handbag—the artifact that had started this entire nightmare, the purse that had belonged to my traitorous bride and hid the original encrypted ledger. From its bottom seam, she extracted not a flash drive, but a flat, micro-thin transponder card etched with gold circuitry.

"This was never just a safe-deposit key," Clara whispered, looking up at me with eyes hollowed by exhaustion. "Your former wife wasn't acting alone when she stole it. She was an operative for the Arnault Consortium, Julian. But before she died, she had a change of heart. She encoded an emergency extraction beacon into the silk lining. It’s tied to an offshore maritime sanctuary."

"Whose sanctuary?" I demanded, scanning the dark river beneath us.

"The one entity the Swiss banks fear more than sovereign courts," Clara said, pressing the copper contact pad on the card. "The Northern Rhine Maritime Trust. They hold the sovereign charter. If we reach their barge before dawn, diplomatic immunity is automatically triggered for the heir."

A high-frequency green pulse began to blink on the edge of the card. A low horn sounded in the far distance through the freezing river fog—three long blasts, deep and vibrating in our ribcages.

A river barge, entirely unlit, was sliding silently through the mist along the eastern channel, cutting through the floating ice like an iron blade. But between our swaying catwalk and the vessel's rusted deck lay a sheer sixty-foot drop into the freezing void.
