Chapter 100 - The Obsidian Protocol

As the officers reached Margaret Arnault, she did not weep or beg. Instead, a horrific, jagged smile spread across her cracked lips. She looked past me, straight at the infant lying on the altar.

"Do you really think this was about an estate, Julian?" she whispered, her voice carrying a ghastly, venomous calm. "You foolish, sentimental boy. You think this ended with a corporate ledger?"

From beneath her heavy coat, she did not draw a gun. She drew an ancient, blackened smartphone of military-grade obsidian glass and tapped a single red icon on its encrypted screen.

High above us, the abbey bells began to toll—not in the rhythmic cadence of morning prayer, but in the frantic, discordant rhythm of a catastrophic emergency alarm.

Suddenly, every screen in the Chapter Hall flickered and died, replaced by a blinding red crest: an eagle with severed wings, the mark of the Obsidian Syndicate—the shadow cabal that sat above even the Swiss banking dynasties.

A violent explosion shook the foundations of the abbey, throwing judges and guards from their feet. Smoke poured through the ventilation grates. The grand stained-glass windows shattered inward, showering the marble floor with thousands of colored shards of razor-sharp glass.

Through the pulverized window frames on the upper balcony, black-clad operatives in full combat rebreathers dropped into the hall on tactical ropes. But they didn't aim their weapons at me, nor at Margaret.

Their laser sights converged instantly on Clara.

"The child in the cradle was the diversion," Margaret laughed hysterically through the smoke and ringing alarms as the ceiling rafters began to groan and buckle. "The true bloodline key isn't the baby, Julian! It was never the baby!"

I whirled around in horror. Clara stood frozen in the center of the smoke, clutching the second twin against her chest—the child she had sworn was an orphan taken from the clinic.

Around Clara's neck, the inner lining of the floral handbag had torn away in the blast, revealing a second, hidden titanium cylinder engraved not with the Vane crest, but with the imperial sovereign seal of an empire thought eradicated eighty years ago.

"Julian, forgive me," Clara whispered in terror, tears cutting through the grime on her cheeks as three laser dots locked squarely onto her forehead.

The mercenary commander dropped to the floor ten feet away, his assault rifle raised, his finger squeezing the trigger.

"Fire!" a voice roared through the smoke—and everything went white.
