Chapter 55 - The Phoenix Dossier

The interior of the salt mill smelled of damp concrete, rust, and decades of stagnant minerals. High above, through gaps in the corrugated iron roof, thin shafts of dawn light cut through the gloom, illuminating mountains of crystallized salt that had fused into solid rock over fifty years of neglect.

I led Clara and the girls into a foreman's observation booth elevated twenty feet above the main floor, accessible only by a single, narrow iron ladder. It was dry, out of the wind, and offered clean sightlines of every ground-level entrance.

Clara immediately stripped the girls of their sodden outer jackets, wrapping them together in an old canvas tarp she salvaged from a workbench, rubbing their small hands furiously. "Their core temperature is dropping, Julian. If we don't get warmth and dry clothes soon, shock is going to set in."

"I know," I said, my teeth clenched.

I pulled the flexible titanium keycard from my waterproof inner pocket. Miraculously, it had survived the blast and the ocean intact. On the back of the card, beneath the Phoenix emblem, was a micro-aperture port—a contact point designed for military-grade field tablets.

I pulled out my rugged satellite communicator, which had been sealed in a vacuum pouch beneath my vest. The screen was cracked, but the battery indicator glowed pale green. I plugged the auxiliary interface cable into the card.

The screen flickered violently, then resolved into a series of stark, high-level system prompts.

*ACCESSING ARCHIVAL NODE: PROJECT REBIRTH.*

*PRIMARY LEDGER IDENTIFIED: THE SEVENTH COVENANT.*

*AUTHORIZATION HOLDER: ARTHUR VANCE (TERMINATED).*

*NEW RECOGNIZED BIOMETRIC: JULIAN VANCE (LINEAGE CONFIRMED).*

Clara leaned over my shoulder, her breath shallow. "What is it?"

"It’s not just a bank account," I whispered, scrolling through the cascade of encrypted data files spilling across the monitor. "Arthur wasn’t working for Vivienne. Vivienne wasn’t working for herself. They were subcontractors. The real architect... is Cynthia Vance."

Clara stiffened. "Your aunt? The one who went into exile after your mother died?"

"She didn't go into exile," I said, a terrible realization crystallizing in my mind. "She founded the Obsidian Arch. She engineered the entire collapse of the De La Tour estate twenty years ago. And she didn't want the twins dead. Look at the medical files attached to the ledger."

I tapped the screen. A series of pediatric genetic reports opened, bearing Mia and Lily’s infant footprints from the private maternity clinic in Geneva where they had been born.

"The twins aren't just heirs to the Vance bloodline," I murmured, my blood turning to ice. "Their maternal DNA carries the cryptographic keys to a legacy trust created before the fall of the European dynasties. The entire bloodline protocol... Arthur's floral handbag... the lithium charges... it was all designed to isolate the girls and force me to bring them to the cathedral vaults where the Arch's recovery team was waiting."

Suddenly, the communicator's screen went black.
