Chapter 17 - The Swiss Ledger

The revelation hit me like a physical blow. Standing in the prison parking lot under the grey afternoon sky, the pieces of Sarah’s frantic final months finally locked into place. Sarah had loved Lily with an intensity that bordered on desperation—not just because she was her mother, but because she knew Lily was an orphan of dangerous lineage, hidden in plain sight within the Sterling household.
I returned to the manor where David and Arthur Vance were waiting in the library. When I slammed Richard’s confession onto the table, Vance didn't flinch. He merely closed his eyes and let out a long, weary sigh.
"Richard was a coward, but he did not lie to you," Vance said softly, pulling a leather-bound folio from his briefcase. "Sarah came to me five years ago when Charles was on his deathbed. Charles had taken Lily from a private clinic in Lyon after her biological parents perished in an engineered plane crash. To protect her from the corporate board that orchestrated the assassination, Charles declared her as Sarah's natural-born daughter."
"And the floral handbag?" I asked, my voice tight with emotion.
"Sarah knew that if she ever met an untimely demise, the board would eventually trace Lily’s real identity," Vance explained. "The brass key inside the lining opens Box 408 at the Credit Banque in Zurich. Inside that box are the DNA profiles, the birth certificates, and the founding charter of the Saint-Cloud dynasty. If those papers are submitted to the High Court of Justice in Paris, Lily inherits sixty percent of the holding company. If they are destroyed, the board absorbs everything, and Lily becomes a loose end they will permanently eliminate."

David Cole rubbed his temples, staring at the map laid across the mahogany table. "Julian, the breach last night was just a probing run. If they know you still hold that key, they won't send cat burglars next time. They'll use state-level resources."
"Then we don't wait for them to come to us," I said, looking out toward the lawn where Lily was playing under the watchful eyes of three armed guards. "We go to Zurich."
