Chapter 7 - THE TRUTH ABOUT LEO'S DADWhile the police escorted Clara Vance away in the back of a flashing cruiser, a social services team accompanied Principal Sterling, Sofia, and Officer Marcus directly to Leo’s home.

The address listed in the school registry was a modest, rundown apartment complex on the industrial outskirts of town. Paint peeled from the wooden exterior stairs, and the hallway smelled faintly of old cooking oil and damp concrete.
Marcus knocked twice on apartment 3B.
After a moment of heavy shuffling from inside, the lock clicked. The door creaked open to reveal a middle-aged man sitting in a battered, second-hand wheelchair. His legs were wrapped in heavy medical bandages, and his face bore the exhausted, deeply lined expression of a man who had fought a losing battle against illness and poverty for years.
"Leo?" Mr. Ramirez gasped, his eyes darting immediately to his son standing in the hallway. "Son, why aren't you in school? What's going on? Did something happen?"
Leo rushed forward, dropping to his knees beside his father’s wheelchair and burying his face in his lap. "Dad... I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to worry you. But it's over. You don't have to worry about Ms. Vance anymore."
Mr. Ramirez looked up, bewildered, staring at the police badge on Marcus's jacket and the stern social worker standing behind them. "I... I don't understand. What does his teacher have to do with anything? Leo is late sometimes because he helps me get out of bed and makes my breakfast before his shift at the bakery..."

"Your son is a hero, Mr. Ramirez," Sofia said softly, stepping into the apartment and closing the door behind her. "And your sacrifices haven't gone unnoticed anymore."
As the social worker stepped forward to offer immediate medical assistance and home-care support services for Mr. Ramirez, the dark cloud that had hovered over the Ramirez household for over a year finally began to lift. But the ripple effects of what happened at St. Jude High were only just beginning to spread across the city.
