Chapter 4 - THE PRINCIPAL'S ULTIMATUMThe fluorescent lights of the Principal’s executive office hummed with a low, oppressive drone.

Principal Arthur Sterling sat behind a massive mahogany desk, tapping a silver pen against a polished surface. Across from him sat Clara Vance, looking like an innocent martyr who had narrowly survived a terrorist attack. On the opposite side sat Sofia, arms crossed and jaw set in defiance, while Leo sat slumped in a chair, staring blankly at his scuffed sneakers, too broken to fight back anymore.

Standing near the door was Officer Marcus Vance, his face dark as thunderclouds, holding the encrypted USB drive tightly in his palm.

"Let’s get one thing straight," Principal Sterling said, his voice flat and devoid of warmth. "St. Jude High has a reputation to uphold. We are three weeks away from the district funding evaluation. We do not need sensationalized violence reports making local headlines."

"Then expel them," Clara suggested smoothly, adjusting her collar. "Leo has an abysmal attendance record, his grades are slipping, and his father is a known burden on the community welfare system. Sofia is an insubordinate troublemaker who clearly suffers from behavioral issues."

"Hold on right there, Arthur!" Marcus boomed, stepping forward and slamming the USB drive onto the desk. "You can't sweep this under the rug! I have the unedited, full-HD archive of Room 304 right here on this drive. It shows Clara unplugging the lens, striking a kneeling child with a wooden ruler, and then plugging it back in when Sofia forced her hand!"

Clara’s heart skipped a beat, but she maintained her chilling composure. "Marcus, family loyalty is admirable, but lying to cover for your erratic behavior on duty is crossing a line. That file is a deepfake. Everyone knows AI tools can generate hyper-realistic video in seconds nowadays. Do you want to destroy this school's entire accreditation over a manipulated clip?"

Sterling’s eyes flicked to the USB drive, then to Marcus, and finally to Sofia. The temptation to take the easy way out—to dismiss the evidence as corrupted or fake to protect the institution—was overwhelming.

"Marcus," Sterling said cautiously, "without an independent forensic audit of that file, releasing it to the board could result in a massive defamation lawsuit against you personally. Are you prepared to lose your pension for a chronically tardy student?"

Sofia felt a hot tear roll down her cheek. The system was rigged. Rich, powerful, manipulative adults always protected their own.

Just as Sterling reached out his hand to slide the USB drive into his desk drawer, Leo slowly stood up.

His voice wasn't loud, but it carried a strange, heavy finality that made everyone in the room stop breathing.

"You don't need the video," Leo whispered, rolling up both sleeves of his worn-out shirt.
