Chapter 6 - The Name on the Sheet

The auditorium was bathed in warm, golden light. The low murmur of a thousand conversations echoed off the high vaulted ceilings.

Olga sat motionless, her hands folded firmly over the navy binder on her lap. The sneers of her parents and brother felt like distant static. She had spent ten years absorbing their poison, letting them believe she was weak, stupid, and broken.

Now, the timer had hit zero.

The Principal stood at the standing microphone, the sealed results sheet in his hand. The crowd quieted down, a hush of anticipation sweeping over the room. In the front row, Jack adjusted his burgundy tie, looking incredibly bored. Blake was scrolling on his phone, barely paying attention.

“Before we begin the conferring of degrees,” the Principal announced, his voice echoing powerfully. “It is my distinct honor to announce the recipient of the Chancellor’s Gold Medal. The highest-ranked student in this rigorous master’s program is…”

The silence was absolute.

The Principal adjusted his glasses. He looked down at the sheet, then looked up, his eyes scanning the front rows until they landed directly on Olga.

“With a flawless 4.0 GPA, and a groundbreaking thesis in corporate financial forensics that has already been requested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation… Miss Olga Vance.”

For three agonizing seconds, the world stopped spinning.

Blake’s head snapped up from his phone so fast his neck cracked. Abigail gasped, her hand flying to her pearl necklace.

But it was Jack’s reaction that was the most magnificent. His arrogant, expectant smile didn't just fade; it shattered. The color drained from his face, leaving him looking like a corpse in a navy suit. He turned to Olga, his eyes wide, his mouth opening and closing like a suffocating fish.

“That… that’s a mistake,” Jack hissed, his voice trembling. He looked around wildly at the relatives sitting behind them, who were now staring at Olga in stunned silence. “There’s been a mistake. You’re… you’re failing.”

Olga turned her head slowly. She didn't smile. She didn't gloat. The look in her eyes was cold enough to freeze the blood in his veins.

“I told you, Jack,” Olga said, her voice dropping to a terrifyingly calm whisper. “Enjoy your last laugh.”

The auditorium erupted into applause.

Olga stood up. The navy binder remained firmly in her grip. As she stepped out into the aisle, Jack instinctively reached out to grab her arm, his fingers digging into the fabric of her gown.

“Sit down,” Jack commanded, his voice a frantic, breathless threat. “I don’t know what game you’re playing, but you are going to sit down right now.”

Olga looked down at his hand. Without a word, she ripped her arm away with such force that Jack stumbled forward in his seat.

She walked toward the stage. Her posture was perfect. Her steps were measured, confident, and powerful. She wasn't the scapegoat anymore. She was the executioner.
