Chapter 18 - The Mother’s Kill-Switch

The morning of Olga’s 29th birthday dawned with a brutal, howling blizzard. The Thorne estate was entirely cut off from the outside world by a wall of white snow, transforming the mountain fortress into an isolated, inescapable island.

Olga sat in her suite, staring at the flawless, midnight-blue silk evening gown laid out on her bed. It was a gift from Elias—her armor for the night.

She had spent the entire night locked in the server room, finalizing the execution parameters for The Widow’s Bite. The code was prepped. The global wire transfers to the charities were queued. The unredacted ledgers were compressed into an encrypted burst-transmission aimed directly at Interpol’s cyber-crimes division in Lyon.

But there was a fatal flaw in the plan.

To execute the kill-switch at midnight, she needed to be physically present in the server room to bypass the final air-gapped firewall. But Elias had made it clear: she was the guest of honor. She would be surrounded by hundreds of the most dangerous criminals on earth in the grand ballroom. Worse, to bypass the firewall, she needed Julian’s master keycard—an encrypted piece of plastic he kept on a lanyard inside his suit jacket at all times.

A knock on the door broke her concentration.

Julian entered, leaning on his silver cane. “Happy birthday, Olga. The guests are arriving. The signing ceremony will take place in the vault beneath the ballroom at precisely midnight. Elias wants you downstairs in one hour.”

“I’ll be ready,” Olga said.

As Julian turned to leave, Olga noticed the faint, rectangular outline of the keycard in his left breast pocket. She was an accountant, not a spy. She didn't know how to pickpocket a trained killer.

If you can't steal it, make him give it to you.

“Julian,” Olga called out.

He paused, looking back.

“Silas is gone. Elias trusts me,” Olga said smoothly, walking toward him. “But I know how this syndicate works. Elias is paranoid. The second I sign over the ten billion dollars at midnight, my leverage is gone. How do I know he won't have you shoot me in the back of the head the moment the ink is dry?”

Julian’s eyes narrowed. “You don't. That is the nature of our business.”

“I need insurance,” Olga demanded. “I want unrestricted access to the security feeds on my phone. If I see your men moving into execution positions during the gala, I won't sign.”

Julian stared at her. He respected cold logic. He reached into his pocket, pulled out the master keycard, and swiped it over Olga’s mobile phone, temporarily granting her device admin-level security clearance.

“You have feed access until 12:01 AM,” Julian said, putting the card back. “Do not test my patience tonight, Olga.”

👉 As Julian walked out, Olga looked down at her phone, watching the admin credentials validate on her screen, realizing she had just acquired the digital skeleton key to destroy Elias Thorne’s empire.
