Chapter 12 - The Man with the Silver Cane

Olga pounded her fist against the freezing steel of the vault door, but it was like hitting a mountainside. She was trapped hundreds of feet below the streets of Geneva. Panic, sharp and suffocating, clawed at her throat, but she ruthlessly forced it down.
Think, Olga. You survived the Vances. You can survive this.
She turned back to the titanium lockbox. She carefully placed her mother’s letter and the birth certificate into the inner pocket of her coat, pressing the heavy silver signet ring onto her right index finger. If she was going to face the devil, she would wear his crest.
Ten agonizing minutes passed in absolute silence.
Then, the heavy lock clicked. The door hissed open.
It wasn't the Swiss bank manager who stood in the doorway. It was a sharply dressed man in his late fifties, leaning heavily on an ornate silver cane. His eyes were pale, calculating, and completely devoid of empathy. Behind him stood four massive men armed with suppressed tactical rifles.
“Miss Thorne, I presume,” the man said, his British accent smooth and deadly. “My name is Julian. I am your father’s chief of operations.”
Olga stood tall, refusing to show a single tremor of fear. “My name is Olga Vance.”
Julian offered a cold, patronizing smile. “Not anymore. Your little graduation stunt in Charlotte was quite the spectacle. When Jack Vance’s arrest hit the international wire, our algorithms flagged it. You made yourself a very public, very brilliant forensic accountant. Did you really think Elias wouldn't notice a girl with his exact eyes taking down a real estate empire?”
Olga’s stomach dropped. Her revenge against Jack had been her own undoing. It had put a massive spotlight on her, illuminating her perfectly for the predators in the dark.
“What does he want?” Olga demanded, keeping her voice entirely level.
“Your father wishes to make up for lost time,” Julian said, stepping aside and gesturing to the corridor. “And since your 29th birthday is rapidly approaching, he insists you spend it at home. The helicopter is waiting.”
“And if I refuse?” Olga asked, her eyes darting to the armed guards.
Julian’s smile vanished. “Then I will have you carried out in a specialized container. The choice is entirely yours, Olga. Walk as an heir, or be shipped as cargo.”
Olga analyzed the variables. Four guns. A subterranean vault. No cell service. She had zero leverage right now. To win a war, you first had to survive the battle.
She lifted her chin, exuding a cold, aristocratic confidence she didn't know she possessed. She adjusted her coat and walked straight past the armed men, her heels clicking sharply against the concrete.
“Lead the way, Julian,” she commanded.
Julian’s eyebrow twitched in mild surprise. He tapped his cane against the floor and followed her to the surface.
Within an hour, Olga was strapped into a matte-black private helicopter, soaring over the jagged, snow-capped peaks of the Swiss Alps. The beauty of the landscape was entirely lost on her. She was analyzing her mother’s letter. The biometric key. Elias needed her alive for three more weeks. That was her window.

The helicopter banked sharply, descending toward a massive, hyper-modern fortress built directly into the side of a mountain. It was an impenetrable compound of glass, steel, and armed patrols.
👉 As the helicopter landed on the illuminated helipad, the doors opened, and Olga locked eyes with the terrifying mastermind who had orchestrated her entire miserable existence.
