Chapter 67 - The Countdown to Midnight

Arthur limped to the snowcat’s driver side, opening an auxiliary equipment bay and pulling out two thermal suits and a pair of insulated boots. He tossed them onto the workbench in front of me.

"Put them on," he commanded. "We have twenty minutes before SAR-09 reaches the railhead. The cog tracks are the only way to the summit in this gale. If we don't sever the transmission line at the peak before midnight, the Samson Contingency goes live."

"Explain it to me," I said, forcing Lily into the oversized thermal suit. "No more riddles. What is actually on that drive?"

"The true registry of ownership," Arthur said, climbing painfully into the driver's cab of the tracked vehicle. "The public thinks this country is run by elected officials and corporate boards. It isn't. For seventy years, an offshore entity known as the Sovereign Trust has held the primary debt securities for sixty-four multinational conglomerates. They orchestrate energy shortages. They manufacture real estate crashes to buy foreclosures at pennies on the dollar. Evelyn’s groom wasn't just an heir; he was the designated heir-apparent to the trust’s executive seat."

He started the snowcat’s massive engine. The machine roared to life with a bone-jarring vibration that shook the concrete floor.

"I spent forty years building that empire," Arthur continued through the open window, his knuckles white against the steering wheel. "And twenty years trying to find a way to dismantle it without triggering a systemic economic collapse that would starve millions. The ledger Lily carried contains the proof. But the Samson protocol Evelyn triggered strips the safeguards. It doesn't just dismantle the trust; it crashes the clearinghouses. The banking systems will lock at midnight. Credit, supply chains, logistics—wiped clean."

"Then why did you build a kill switch at the peak?" I asked, hoisting Lily into the rear cabin of the vehicle.

"I didn't build a kill switch," Arthur said grimly, looking down at the heavy tracked controls. "I built an override. But to use it, the system requires two separate physical tokens, inserted simultaneously into the base terminal at the summit."

He tapped his chest, right over the humming medical harness.

"The second token is wired into my pacemaker. The only way to stop the broadcast is to shut down my heart."
