Chapter 3 - The Shattering of a Golden Image

Inside the ballroom, the temperature seemed to drop ten degrees.
My mother, who had spent the entire evening ordering me around like a servant and sneering at my modest dress, sat paralyzed in her front-row seat. Her mouth was open, her fingers clawing helplessly at the velvet fabric of her dress as if she were suffocating. The guests sitting nearest to her instinctively pulled their chairs away, casting looks of pure, unadulterated disgust in her direction.
I stood frozen near the center aisle, holding my daughter’s small hand. Lily was trembling beside me, burying her face against my navy dress. I knelt down, wrapping my arms protectively around her, whispering softly into her hair. "You’re so brave, sweetie. You did the right thing."
On the stage, Graham Ellison looked like a man who had just watched his entire world detonate.
He didn't scream. He didn't throw a punch. He possessed the cold, surgical precision of a top-tier real estate attorney who had just uncovered a massive, premeditated fraud. Slowly, deliberately, he turned his gaze from the giant screen down to Vanessa, who had dropped to her knees on the stage, weeping hysterically and clutching at the hem of his tuxedo trousers.
"Graham, please! Let me explain!" she wailed, her mascara running in dark, ugly streaks down her cheeks. "It was just talk! Marcus was joking! I love you! You know I love you!"
Graham looked down at her the way a scientist might look at a venomous insect crawling across a laboratory desk. With infinite care, he reached down, peeled her clutching fingers away from his trousers one by one, and stepped backward.
"You love my portfolio," Graham said. His voice was not loud, but it carried across the silent ballroom with the crushing weight of a falling anvil. "You love the fact that I trusted you. You love the fact that I spent the last year treating you like a queen while you and your lover plotted to rob me blind."
Marcus Vance, who had been sitting near the back of the ballroom as an invited guest under the guise of an "old family friend," realized the walls were closing in. He stood up abruptly, grabbing his designer overcoat from his chair, and made a frantic dash toward the side exit doors.

"Stop that man!" shouted an elderly judge from the front row—one of Graham’s senior partners. "Someone security-lock those doors! That’s corporate conspiracy and wire fraud on tape!"
Two burly estate security guards didn't hesitate. They lunged across the aisle, tackling Marcus near the exit and pinning him face-down against the mahogany credenza amidst a shattered display of decorative gourds and wine bottles.
