Chapter 62 - The Wrong Verse

The old sedan started with a rough, throaty roar that rattled the steering column. I slammed the shifter into drive and tore out through the service gate just as headlights appeared along the southern perimeter.
In the rearview mirror, figures in tactical gear were pouring out of the transport helicopter, sweeping the runway. Julian had bought us minutes, maybe less. My heart was pounding so hard against my ribs that my chest ached. Next to me in the passenger seat, Lily sat with her knees pulled up to her chest, clutching her small backpack as though it were the only anchor left in an unraveling universe.
On the dashboard, the satellite phone rested on speaker, the mechanical breathing of Arthur Vance filling the cramped cabin of the car.
"Arthur, Julian is still back there," I said, my voice shaking with fury and panic. "They will kill him."
"They will interrogate him," Arthur corrected flatly. "They need to know what he heard in the bunker. That buys him time. If you turn back, you forfeit everything he just sacrificed himself for."
"You said she sang the wrong verse," I demanded, swerving onto Route 1, heading deep into the jagged, blackout-hit coast of Maine where cell towers were down and the night was an ocean of ink. "What does that mean? She sang the lullaby from the music box. The melody unlocked the deep-sea transmitter just like your cipher instructed!"
For a long moment, there was only the sound of the respirator cycling air.
"The melody Lily sang unlocked Transmitter Katahdin," Arthur said quietly. "It initiated the broadcast of the syndicate’s offshore ledger. But the music box contained two variations of that tune. The first verse initiates an orderly handover to an international tribunal. The second verse... the one she sang... triggers the Samson Contingency."
A cold knot formed in my stomach. "What is the Samson Contingency?"
"A total scorched-earth burn," Arthur replied. "In less than five hours, the cipher will not just expose the Board's financial accounts. It will release the raw cryptographic master keys to the domestic energy grid, the eastern pipeline switches, and the deep-cover identities of every operative embedded within the state department. The entire system will collapse in fire. They won't just hunt you down, Claire. They will burn down every state between Maine and Virginia to find the kill switch."
I looked over at my daughter. Lily looked back at me, her eyes wide, glistening with unshed tears.

"Mom," she whispered, her voice trembling. "I didn't mean to. The music box... when Aunt Evelyn broke it on the floor before the wedding... the brass cylinder skipped. It skipped three pins forward. That was the song that came out."
"It wasn't an accident," Arthur said from the dashboard. "Evelyn didn't break it out of spite. She dropped it because she knew exactly what the second verse would do. She wanted the world to burn with her."
