Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the Ballroom

The dark screen above the pristine white orchid arrangements flickered once, twice, and then snapped into high-definition clarity.

For three hundred guests sipping vintage champagne inside the opulent Rosewood Estate, the festive atmosphere evaporated in less than a heartbeat. What replaced it was the heavy, suffocating silence of a courtroom listening to a closing verdict.

On the giant display, the camera angle was slightly shaky—clearly held by a small pair of hands that had not yet learned how to keep a lens entirely steady. It showed the sunlit, mirror-lined walls of the bridal preparation suite on the estate’s second floor. The timestamp in the corner of the frame indicated it had been recorded three days earlier, during the rehearsal weekend.

Vanessa’s voice drifted through the high-end ceiling speakers, bright, bubbly, and dripping with manic laughter.

"...are you kidding me? A prenup? Marcus, keep your voice down! If Graham hears you talking about asset division before the ink is even dry on the marriage certificate, he’ll start asking uncomfortable questions!"

A collective gasp rippled through the front rows of the ballroom. Several bridesmaids dropped their champagne flutes, the crystal shattering against the polished oak floor with sharp, discordant cracks.

On the elevated stage, Graham Ellison’s face went completely, bloodlessly white. He turned his head slowly, his jaw set in a hard, dangerous line, and looked down at his new bride.

Vanessa looked like she had been struck by lightning. Her meticulously applied makeup couldn't hide the sickly, ashen green undertone of her skin. She grabbed at the expensive lace and pearls of her wedding gown, her breath coming in shallow, frantic gasps. "That's—that's a fake!" she shrieked, her voice cracking into an ugly, high-pitched screech. "It’s AI-generated! Someone doctored that audio to ruin my wedding! Graham, look at me! Don't listen to this garbage!"

But the video didn't stop.

The camera angle shifted slightly as Lily, hiding behind an ornate privacy screen near the vanity table, adjusted the frame. The video now clearly displayed Vanessa sitting at the makeup station, sipping a mimosa while tapping her manicured nails against the edge of the glass. Standing behind her, massaging her shoulders with casual familiarity, was Marcus Vance—a local real estate developer known for his lavish, questionable lifestyle and aggressive business tactics.

"Relax, gorgeous," Marcus’s voice echoed through the ballroom, smooth and utterly unbothered. "The prenup is drafted so that after twenty-four months of marriage, half of his commercial real estate portfolio transfers directly to your separate trust. Once the divorce is finalized on grounds of irreconcilable differences—or better yet, an indiscretion on his part—we cash out, pay off my debts, and buy that villa in Tuscany we’ve been dreaming about."

Vanessa threw her head back and laughed—that bright, musical laugh she usually reserved for cocktail parties. "And the best part is," she purred on screen, "that pathetic schoolteacher sister of mine paid thirty thousand dollars for this entire wedding! We didn't spend a single dime of our own money. She practically handed us the seed capital for our future."
