Chapter 28 - The Digital Graveyard

Vanessa let out a hollow, hysterical laugh that echoed off the steel bulkheads. "Mom? Mom didn't give you a damn thing! You were always the golden child! The good girl who got the degree, married the boring accountant, had the boring baby, and lived in your pathetic little suburban bubble!"

She pointed a shaking, trembling hand at the glowing terminal behind her.

"I was the one who stayed!" Vanessa shouted, her voice breaking into a ragged sob. "I was the one who sat by Arthur’s side at every dinner, smiling at those disgusting old men, letting them pinch my waist while Arthur negotiated our family's survival! I built the Vance name back from the gutter! And what did Arthur do? He left every single dollar to *you*!"

I stopped five feet from her, staring at the screen. The terminal display wasn't routing money to an offshore shell.

Across the top of the monitor, glowing in bold green font, was a master trust document:

*THE LILY CLAIRE VANCE LIVING TRUST — ESTABLISHED BY ARTHUR VANCE.*

*PRIMARY EXECUTOR: CLAIRE VANCE.*

*SOLE BENEFICIARY: LILY VANCE.*

*STATUS: LOCKED. REQUIRES TWO-PARTY BIOMETRIC RELEASE (MOTHER & CHILD).*

My breath seized in my lungs. "Arthur... he didn't set me up."

"He despised me!" Vanessa shrieked, tears carving pale tracks through the soot on her cheeks. "He said I was weak! He said I had the ambition of a queen and the intellect of a courtesan! He told me the wedding was my reward—that once I married into high society, I would be taken care of, but the Vance legacy would belong to the only person in this family who possessed an ounce of real honor!"

She grabbed a heavy iron wrench from the maintenance bench beside the terminal, her knuckles turning bone-white.

"He wanted you to have it," she hissed, stepping toward me, her eyes wild with madness. "He gave you the codes. He gave your brat the silver drive to ruin my wedding so the trust wouldn't dissolve into my husband's accounts! But Lawrence is going to wipe it all. Lawrence promised me two million in bearer bonds if I locked you into the federal liability ledger!"

"Where is Croft, Vanessa?" Graham barked, raising his weapon from behind me. "Drop the wrench. Now!"

Vanessa’s eyes flickered toward the dark gangway above us, and a sickening smile slowly curled her lips.

"You're too late, Graham," she whispered.

From the shadows of the catwalk directly above the server racks, the sharp crack of a suppressed firearm hissed through the air.

Graham grunted, his shoulder jerking violently as a round tore through his bicep. The gun flew from his hand, clattering beneath the server racks, and he slammed against the bulkhead, clutching his bleeding arm.

"Graham!" I screamed, dropping toward him.

"Step away from the console, Claire," Lawrence Croft’s voice dropped from the rafters like ice.

He descended the iron spiral staircase with horrifying calm, a sleek tactical pistol held in a two-handed grip, trained directly on my forehead. In his left hand, he held a remote detonator. The digital display on the handheld device matched the timer on the exterior generator outside.

*00:02:14.*

"Lawrence, I did it!" Vanessa cried, dropping the wrench and scrambling toward him like an obedient dog. "I loaded her master credentials into the liability index! Just authorize the bearer bonds and let's get out of here before the feds arrive!"

Croft didn't look at her.

Without breaking eye contact with me, Croft calmly shifted the barrel of his weapon four inches to the left and pulled the trigger.

The gunshot was deafening.

Vanessa’s breath hitched in a sharp, wet gasp. She stumbled backward, her hands flying to her abdomen, her wide, disbelieving eyes staring at the man who had promised her salvation.

"You were always so exceptionally tiresome, Vanessa," Croft said softly.

Vanessa collapsed onto the cold steel deck, blood pooling beneath her dark coat, choking on her own breath as she clawed weakly at the air.
