Chapter 30 - The Master of the Board

Tears blinded me as I gripped the cold silver drive. I shoved it violently into the master auxiliary port beneath the console, grabbed Vanessa’s trembling, blood-soaked right hand, and slammed her palm down onto the secondary scanner beside my own.
The console flared brilliant, blinding green.
*DUAL BIOMETRIC RECOGNIZED: CLAIRE VANCE & VANESSA VANCE.*
*SYSTEM PURGE ABORTED.*
*ENCRYPTION RELEASED. BROADCASTING MASTER SYNDICATE REGISTRY TO FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION, INTERPOL, AND FINANCIAL CRIMES NETWORK.*
*DATA TRANSFER: 100% COMPLETE.*
A piercing digital klaxon echoed through the ship, followed by the deep, shuddering hum of the main generators powering down safely. The self-destruct sequence vanished from the screen, replaced by a wall of cascading code—every offshore account, every bribe, every dirty politician, every corporate shell, and every operative name being transmitted live to every major law enforcement agency on the planet.
Across the room, Croft froze.
He had Graham pinned against the shattered plexiglass, his forearm pressed against Graham’s windpipe, but as the computer announced the global transmission, Croft’s face drained of every drop of color.
"You fool," Croft breathed, his voice barely audible over the hum of the servers. "You have no idea what you've done. You didn't just ruin me. You just declared war on the most powerful men on earth."
With a swift, brutal kick, Croft shoved Graham away and scrambled backward, bolting up the iron spiral staircase toward the deck above.
"Let him run," Graham gasped from the floor, clutching his bleeding chest, coughing violently as he dragged himself toward us. "The feds... the feds will have this entire perimeter surrounded in five minutes."
I sank to my knees on the bloody deck plates, pulling Vanessa’s head onto my lap.
Her skin was ice-cold. Her breathing had slowed to shallow, irregular gasps. She looked up at me, the madness and hatred completely gone from her face, leaving only the terrified little sister I used to protect from our father’s drunken rages twenty years ago.
"Claire..." she whispered, her fingers barely possessing the strength to hold my sleeve. "I'm sorry. I just... I just wanted them to look at me the way they looked at you."
"Don't talk, Vanessa," I sobbed, pressing my hand against the gunshot wound in her stomach, feeling the warm blood slip uselessly through my fingers. "Stay with me. The medics are coming. Just hold on, please!"
A faint, tragic smile touched her lips. "Give... give Lily her bear back. Tell her... Aunt Vanessa was sorry about her dress."
Her hand went limp.
The tension drained from her body all at once, her head rolling slightly to the side on my lap, her unseeing eyes staring up at the rusted steel ceiling of *The Elmhurst*.
"Vanessa?" I shook her shoulders, my voice cracking into a ragged, broken wail that echoed through the hollow ship. "Vanessa! Wake up! Please, Vanessa!"
Graham reached us, wrapping his good arm around my shoulders, pulling me tightly against his chest as I wept over the body of my sister. For three long minutes, the only sound in the dark engine room was my sobbing and the steady, automated hum of the terminal that had just dismantled an international empire.
Then, cutting through the silence, a sharp, rhythmic buzz vibrated across the metal floor.
It was Croft’s tactical satellite phone, dropped during his fight with Graham, lying face up beneath the shattered glass.
Graham picked it up, glancing at the encrypted display. The caller ID was completely blank—a private satellite uplink from an unlisted transponder.
Graham tapped the speakerphone button, his voice hoarse and lethal. "Croft is gone. It's over. The entire registry has been transmitted to the Department of Justice."
A brief pause hung on the line.
Then, a distorted, synthesized voice came through the small speaker, calm, aristocratic, and completely unbothered:
"Congratulations, Mrs. Vance. You have successfully dismantled Mr. Croft’s operational cell. A messy instrument, Lawrence. We are glad to be rid of him."
My blood turned to pure ice. I leaned toward the phone, my voice shaking with fury. "Who are you?"
"That is entirely irrelevant," the voice replied smoothly. "What is relevant, Claire, is that the eleven-billion-dollar trust you just unlocked does not belong to you. And it certainly does not belong to your daughter."
"The feds have everything," Graham growled. "You're finished."
A soft, chilling chuckle echoed through the phone.
"The Federal Bureau of Investigation works for the people who sign their appropriations, Mr. Sterling. The files Claire just transmitted will be classified under National Security mandates within the hour. But more importantly... you really should have checked the medical wing at St. Matthew before coming to the docks."
My heart stopped beating entirely. The air vanished from my lungs.
"What did you do?" I whispered, my voice barely a squeak. "What did you do to Lily?!"
"Your daughter has such lovely manners, Claire," the voice murmured, the sound of a little girl’s laughter playing faintly in the background of the call. "She was so very polite to the transport team. If you ever wish to see her take another breath, you will board the vessel currently docked at Berth 4. You will bring the master hardware. And you will come alone."
May you like
The line went dead.
And from outside in the foggy harbor, a deep, deafening ship horn blasted through the mist.
