Chapter 50 - The Key to the New World

Lily stood before the brass receiver, her chest heaving, her eyes locked on the console's pulsing emerald light.
Gunfire tore through the room. Graham was down on one knee, his weapon clicking empty. He drew his sidearm, firing his final three rounds into the chest of an advancing operative before a concussive grenade detonated against the blast door, throwing him across the concrete floor, motionless.
The smoke parted.
Walking through the shattered doorway, stepping over the bodies of his fallen men with terrifying elegance, came a tall, slender woman dressed in a pristine charcoal military overcoat. Her hair was pulled back in an immaculate silver knot. In her gloved right hand, she held a silenced semi-automatic pistol.
It was Victoria Vance—Arthur’s first wife, the woman who had supposedly died in a private sanitarium thirty years ago. The true Architect of the Consortium.
"Stop singing, little bird," Victoria said, her voice dripping with ice as she raised the barrel of the gun, pointing it straight between Lily's eyes. "Or your mother watches your blood decorate this machine."

"Arthur was a sentimental coward who wanted to preserve a decaying, broken world," Victoria whispered, her eyes devoid of human warmth. "I built the future. The blackout was step one. In ten minutes, my orbital relays will broadcast the Consortium’s New Sovereign Protocol. The entire world will bow to our ledger."
She stepped forward, pressing the cold steel of the silencer firmly against the center of my forehead.
"Step aside, Claire. Hand me the drive, and I will let the child live as a ward of the state. Refuse... and I end the Vance bloodline right here."
Behind me, at the console, a red warning light began to strobe on the terminal screen. An automated mechanical voice echoed from the speakers:
*"Acoustic input interrupted. Master purge lock will finalize in fifteen seconds. System lock irreversible."*
Lily looked at the gun pressed against my head. Then she looked at the microphone. Her eyes met mine—and in that split second, I saw Arthur’s defiant, unbreakable fire burning in the soul of my eight-year-old child.
She didn't run. She didn't cry.

Lily inhaled deeply, opened her mouth, and hit the first of the final eight forbidden notes.
Victoria’s finger tightened on the trigger—
