Chapter 5 - THE DESPERATE OFFERBy midnight, news of the disaster at the Blackwood Grand had leaked to the press.

Social media was flooded with high-definition videos recorded by gala guests showing Vanessa Cole dumping champagne on my head, followed immediately by the video of Alexander Blackwood declaring the cancellation of the fifty-million-dollar deal with Vale Capital.
The headlines across Wall Street journals were brutal:

I sat in the quiet hotel lounge on the second floor, enjoying a warm cup of herbal tea.
The glass doors opened, and Richard Vale walked in.
He looked like a man who had been hit by a freight train. His tie was undone, his hair messily tossed, his eyes red and bloodshot. He carried a leather folder under his arm.
He walked straight to my table, stopped, and bowed his head deeply.
“Dr. Vance,” Richard said, his voice trembling with desperation. “Please. I am begging you for ten minutes of your time.”
I gestured calmly to the empty chair across from me. “Sit down, Richard.”
He sat down immediately, setting the leather folder on the table between us.
“I had no idea Vanessa was treating people like that,” Richard pleaded, holding his hands together. “I swear to you, Dr. Vance! If I had known she was abusing staff, I would have stopped her instantly!”
“You sat at table four while she yelled at three different waiters before I even walked over with the champagne, Richard,” I replied, taking a slow sip of tea. “You laughed when she made a joke about my shoes. You enabled her because you thought it made your table look powerful.”
Richard winced as if struck.
“I broke off the engagement an hour ago,” Richard blurted out, sliding the leather folder toward me. “I threw her out of my apartment. I canceled her credit cards. I’m stripping her name from the foundation.”
I looked at the folder, then up into his frantic eyes. “And you think sacrificing Vanessa fixes your firm’s financial exposure?”
“Vale Capital will collapse by Friday if Blackwood Holdings doesn't sign the joint venture,” Richard wept softly, dropping all pretense of executive pride. “I will transfer fifteen percent of my personal equity in the project directly to Vance Global. Free of charge. You will have full voting control over every hotel property in the deal.”
I looked at the agreement papers inside the folder. It was a massive concession—an offer that would net my company millions in pure profit without risking a single dollar.
I closed the folder with a quiet thud.
“No, Richard,” I said.
Richard blinked, stunned. “What...? Why? It’s fifteen percent equity! That’s thirty million dollars!”
“Because your company’s ethics are built on panic, not integrity,” I explained softly. “You only care about character when the video goes viral. That is not a business model I invest in.”

I stood up, leaving my cup of tea on the saucer.
“Goodnight, Richard,” I said. “I suggest you prepare your board for Friday’s market opening.”
