Chapter 2 - THE ANNOUNCEMENTRichard Vale, Vanessa’s fiancé, pushed his way through the crowd near the bar, looking frantically between Alexander Blackwood and the dripping wet maid standing beside him.

“Alexander!” Richard stammered, smoothing the front of his expensive tuxedo jacket. “I’m sure there’s been a misunderstanding! Vanessa was just stressed about the charity presentation—”
“Silence, Richard,” Alexander commanded without even turning his head.
Vanessa took an involuntary step back, clutching her diamond necklace with trembling fingers. “Alexander, what do you mean who she is? She’s wearing a staff badge! She was serving drinks!”
I reached up to my chest, unclipped the plastic name tag that read ‘Elena - Housekeeping’, and tossed it casually onto the table beside Vanessa’s champagne flute.
“My name is Dr. Elena Vance,” I said, my voice clear, steady, and carrying across the silent ballroom. “I hold a Ph.D. in Hospitality Systems Management from Cornell, and I am the primary shareholder and newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of Vance Global Logistics.”
Gasps erupted across the room like a wave.
Richard Vale turned completely pale. His jaw fell open, his eyes widening in sheer horror.
“Vance... Vance Global?” Richard choked out. “The firm holding forty-nine percent of the equity in our joint venture?”
“The very same, Richard,” I replied, looking him straight in the eye. “For the last three months, my firm has been preparing a complete operational audit of Blackwood Holdings prior to our proposed merger. I personally requested to work undercover as a line employee across five different properties.”
I stepped closer to Vanessa, whose face had drained of every drop of color.
“I wanted to see how this hotel was run from the ground up,” I continued softly. “I wanted to see how management treated the staff. And most importantly, I wanted to see how high-profile guests treated the human beings who work for a living.”
Vanessa swallowed hard, her voice squeaking. “Elena... I... I didn't know—”
“You didn't know I had power,” I interrupted coldly. “That’s the point, isn't it? You thought I was powerless, so you felt entitled to pour alcohol over my face and demand I beg on the floor.”
Alexander stepped beside me, his broad frame casting a long shadow over table four. He pulled a silver pen from his breast pocket and turned to his executive assistant, who was standing behind him with a digital tablet.
“Marcus,” Alexander said flatly. “Terminate all contract negotiations with Vale Capital immediately.”
“What?!” Richard shrieked, taking two frantic steps forward. “Alexander, no! You can’t cancel the merger! We’ve been working on this deal for nine months! Millions of dollars are on the line!”
“I do not do business with men who enable abusive behavior, Richard,” Alexander replied, his tone devoid of all mercy. “And Blackwood Holdings does not partner with firms whose representatives treat my CEO with disrespect.”
Vanessa turned to Richard, weeping hysterically. “Richard! Do something! Tell him he can’t do this!”
Richard turned toward Vanessa, his eyes wild with sudden, ruinous rage. “Shut up, Vanessa! Just shut your mouth!”
Alexander looked at me, resting his hand gently against the small of my back to guide me out of the circle. “Come, Elena. Let’s get you changed into dry clothes before dinner.”

As we walked toward the grand staircase, forty wealthy guests pulled out their phones to take photos of Vanessa and Richard screaming at each other beside the shattered glass.
The trap had sprung. But my audit was far from over.
