Chapter 8 - MELISSA'S CONFESSION

Melissa entered the kitchen shaking.
Claire gave her water.
Nathan remained standing.
Ethan sat beside his mother.
Nobody trusted Melissa.
She seemed to know it.
“I helped her.”
Nathan’s voice was cold.
“With what?”
“The belly.”
Melissa looked ashamed.
“I ordered it.”
Ethan leaned forward.
“The fake stomach?”
Melissa nodded.
“Silicone.”
“How long?”
“Almost two months.”
Nathan’s hands curled into fists.
Claire remained expressionless.
Melissa continued.
“Vanessa told me Nathan had promised her a future and then abandoned her.”
“I never promised her anything,” Nathan said.
“I know that now.”
“What changed?”
Melissa pushed the black envelope across the table.
Inside were printed messages.
Vanessa.
Daniel Caldwell.
Lucas Grant.
Claire started reading.
Her face changed.
Nathan took the pages.
One message from Daniel said:
THE CHILD ONLY HAS TO EXIST LONG ENOUGH FOR HIM TO SIGN.
Another read:
AFTER THE ACKNOWLEDGMENT, WE CONTROL THE NEXT STEP.
Lucas had written:
THE TRUST DOESN’T REQUIRE A LIVE BIRTH FOR TEMPORARY FUNDS, BUT PERMANENT BENEFICIARY STATUS WILL REQUIRE DOCUMENTATION.
Vanessa replied:
I’LL HANDLE THE DOCUMENTATION.
Nathan looked at Melissa.
“Where did you get these?”
“Vanessa used my old tablet.”
“Why?”
“She didn’t know her account still synced to it.”
“Why bring them now?”
Melissa’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because yesterday she asked me to lie to the police.”
Ethan felt Claire’s hand move closer to his.
Nathan’s voice dropped.
“About what?”
Melissa looked at Ethan.
“She said Ethan had been stalking her.”
The room went silent.
“She wanted me to say he followed her, photographed her without permission, and threatened to expose private medical information unless she paid him.”
Ethan stared at her.
“That’s insane.”
“I know.”
Nathan stepped closer.
“What else?”
“She said if things went wrong, she could claim the stress caused the miscarriage.”
“There was no miscarriage.”
“I know.”
Melissa wiped her face.
“She planned to make Ethan the reason the baby was supposedly lost.”
Claire stood so fast her chair scraped the floor.
Nathan turned toward her.
Claire’s voice trembled with fury.
“She was going to blame my son for killing a baby that never existed?”
Melissa nodded.
Nathan looked toward Ethan.
Something in his expression broke.
The betrayal was no longer about money.
It had reached his child.
“Where is Vanessa now?”
“I don’t know.”
“Daniel?”
“I don’t know.”
“Lucas?”
Melissa shook her head.
Nathan called corporate security.
Lucas had left the office at 3:10 p.m.
He had taken no laptop.
His phone was off.
Daniel had not answered calls since noon.
Nathan contacted his attorney.
The attorney contacted law enforcement.
The conspiracy had moved beyond family deception.
Potential fraud.
Forgery.
Identity misuse.
Attempted financial theft.
Possible false reporting.
By midnight, investigators were involved.
Melissa agreed to give a formal statement.
Before leaving, she stopped beside Ethan.
“I’m sorry.”
Ethan looked at her.
“You knew it was fake.”
“Yes.”
“And you still helped.”
Melissa lowered her eyes.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Money.”
The answer was painfully simple.
Vanessa had paid her fifteen thousand dollars.
Ethan nodded.
“At least you finally told the truth.”
Melissa left.
Nathan stood at the window.
Claire came beside him.
“You need to tell Ethan something.”
Nathan turned.
She continued.
“Not about Vanessa.”
Nathan understood.
He looked at his son.
“I’m sorry.”
Ethan did not answer.
Nathan walked closer.
“You never should have been the person trying to protect this family from something I caused.”
Ethan swallowed.
Nathan continued.
“I failed your mother.”
He looked at Claire.
“And I failed you.”
Ethan finally spoke.
“Are you saying that because you got caught in something bigger?”
“No.”
Nathan’s eyes were wet.
“I’m saying it because it’s true.”
Ethan looked away.
Forgiveness did not happen that night.
But something else did.
For the first time since Vanessa appeared, Nathan stopped defending himself.
And that mattered.
At 2:06 a.m., Nathan’s phone rang.
Corporate security had found something.
Lucas Grant had transferred three million dollars from a dormant company account.

The destination belonged to a corporation created six weeks earlier.
Its registered owner was Vanessa Reed.
