Chapter 17 - THE REAL AMENDMENT

The document Daniel stole from Margaret’s safe was not entirely forged.
Part of it was real.
Nathan’s grandfather had drafted an amendment shortly before his death.
It was never formally added to the trust because one final witness signature was missing.
But the document contained information nobody in the family had discussed for sixteen years.
Nathan read a scanned copy recovered from Daniel’s files.
Then he sat down.
Claire stood beside him.
Ethan was across the room.
The amendment proposed transferring controlling family shares not to Nathan’s future children collectively, but specifically to Nathan’s first legally recognized son upon adulthood.
Ethan.
Claire whispered, “That means…”
Nathan nodded.
“At eighteen, Ethan would have received controlling voting rights.”
Ethan stared.
“I’m sixteen.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you know?”
“Because the amendment was never finalized.”
The attorney continued reading.
There was more.
Nathan’s grandfather feared conflict between his grandsons.
He had written a private explanation.
Daniel lacks patience and restraint.
Nathan lacks the willingness to see betrayal when it comes from family.
Ethan looked at his father.
Nathan almost laughed at the accuracy.
The document had no current legal authority.
But it could still be dangerous.
If Vanessa believed the amendment was valid, she might assume Ethan stood between Daniel and permanent control.
Claire’s face went white.
“That’s why Daniel mentioned Ethan.”
Nathan immediately called the security team.
Ethan was placed under constant protection.
He hated it.
Nathan refused to compromise.
That night Ethan slept in a guest room between Claire’s room and a security officer.
At 3:14 a.m., the alarm activated.
A downstairs window had been opened.
Security moved instantly.
Nathan reached Ethan first.
“Stay here.”
Claire locked the door.
Officers searched the house.
Nobody was inside.
The window had not been forced.
Someone had used a key.
Only four people possessed keys.
Nathan.
Claire.
Ethan.
Margaret.
Then Claire remembered.
Vanessa had borrowed Nathan’s key months earlier.
She claimed she accidentally took it home.
She returned it the next day.
She had copied it.
Nothing appeared stolen.
Until Ethan checked his room.
The broken camera containing the hidden flash drive was gone.
Vanessa knew about the photographs.
She knew Ethan kept backups.
She had entered the house looking for evidence.
But she made another mistake.
The flash drive inside the camera was no longer the original.
Ethan had moved the evidence weeks earlier.
The stolen drive contained school photographs.
Nathan stared at him.
“You moved it?”
“After she killed my computer.”
Claire looked almost proud.
Ethan added, “I’m not stupid.”
Nathan hugged him.
Ethan stiffened in surprise.
Then slowly hugged him back.
The moment lasted only seconds.
A security officer entered.
“We found something outside.”
Near the side gate was a torn piece of black fabric.
Caught inside it was a tiny silver object.
A safety pin.
Vanessa had apparently dropped it while climbing over the gate.
Ethan stared at it.
The same kind of pin that exposed her in the beginning.
Nathan looked toward the dark yard.
“She was here.”
Claire nodded.
“And now she knows the evidence still exists.”
May you like
The next move belonged to Vanessa.
Nobody expected her to make it publicly.
