Chapter 18 - THE LIVE CONFESSION

At noon the next day, Vanessa started a livestream.
Thousands of people joined within minutes.
She appeared inside an unfamiliar room.
Her face was pale.
No makeup.
No perfect clothes.
No pregnancy belly.
For the first time, she looked exactly like what she was.
A woman running out of options.
“Nathan Caldwell destroyed my life.”
Nathan watched from his attorney’s office.
Claire watched beside him.
Ethan remained in another secured room.
Vanessa held up the original trust amendment.
“His family has been hiding documents for years.”
Nathan’s attorney whispered, “She thinks it’s valid.”
Vanessa continued.
“I was used.”
She blamed Daniel.
She blamed Lucas.
She blamed Nathan.
She admitted the pregnancy had been fake.
The livestream comments exploded.
Nathan closed his eyes.
The central lie was finally public.
Then Vanessa said something unexpected.
“Daniel paid me to make Nathan believe he was going to have another child.”
Nathan looked up.
“He promised me two million dollars.”
She held up messages.
“He wanted control of the company.”
Vanessa began crying.
“But then I learned what they were really hiding.”
She displayed the amendment.
“Nathan’s son Ethan is worth more to this family than anyone knows.”
Claire stood.
“Turn it off.”
The attorney shook his head.
“We need to hear what she says.”
Vanessa continued.
“If anything happens to me, the truth is already scheduled to be released.”
Then she stared into the camera.
“Nathan.”
A pause.
“I know you’re watching.”
Nathan’s hands tightened.
“Bring me five million dollars and guarantee immunity.”
The attorney laughed bitterly.
“She thinks you can guarantee prosecution immunity?”
Vanessa continued.
“Do it before six tonight.”
“Otherwise every document I have goes public.”
The livestream ended.
Nathan looked at his attorney.
“We’re not paying her.”
“No.”
“We’re also not letting her come near Ethan.”
“No.”
Police had already begun tracing the broadcast.
Vanessa made another call two hours later.
This time directly to Nathan.
He answered under supervision.
“You embarrassed me.”
Vanessa sounded exhausted.
“You did that yourself.”
“I could have loved you.”
Nathan almost pitied her.
Almost.
“No.”
“What?”
“You loved what you thought my name could buy you.”
Silence.
Nathan continued.
“I used you to escape my problems.”
He looked at Claire across the room.
“That was wrong.”
Vanessa’s breathing changed.
Nathan continued.
“But you never loved me.”
“You don’t know that.”
“I do now.”
Vanessa whispered, “Bring the money.”
“No.”
“I’ll destroy you.”
“You tried.”
“I’ll destroy Ethan.”
Nathan’s entire expression changed.
“Say his name again.”
Vanessa laughed.
“There he is.”
Nathan’s voice became calm.
“If you threaten my son again, this conversation ends.”
“You’re in no position to make rules.”
Nathan glanced at the investigator.
The trace had locked.
Location confirmed.
An old conference resort outside Madison.
Nathan kept her talking.
“What happens at six?”
“You’ll find out.”
Police were already moving.
May you like
Vanessa did not know.
For once, she believed the wrong thing.
