Chapter 13 - THE BOARDROOM WAR

Nathan returned to Caldwell Group on Friday morning.
Rumors had already spread.
Employees knew Lucas had been detained.
They knew accounts were under investigation.
They knew Daniel was missing.
They did not know about Vanessa’s fake pregnancy.
Nathan wanted to keep Ethan out of the corporate fight.
Ethan agreed.
Then Daniel released the video.
At 10:13 a.m., every major executive received an anonymous link.
The video showed Nathan entering a hotel with Vanessa months earlier.
Another clip showed them kissing.
Another showed Vanessa crying outside Nathan’s car.
Then a title appeared.
CALDWELL CEO ABANDONS PREGNANT MISTRESS WHILE HIDING COMPANY FRAUD.
The accusation was false.
The footage was not.
Within an hour, the video reached social media.
Reporters called.
Clients called.
Board members demanded answers.
Nathan stood in his office watching his life collapse in public.
Claire entered.
“You need to speak before Daniel defines the story.”
Nathan looked at her.
“If I explain the fake pregnancy, I expose Ethan.”
“Not necessarily.”
“He’s the one who discovered it.”
“You can leave his name out.”
Nathan nodded.
At noon, he held a private board meeting.
No cameras.
No press.
He admitted the affair.
He admitted his failure.
Then he presented the fraud evidence.
The forged ultrasound.
The fake medical forms.
The trust documents.
Lucas’s transfers.
Daniel’s messages.
Silence filled the room.
One board member asked, “Can all of this be independently verified?”
Nathan’s attorney answered.
“Yes.”
Another asked, “Where is Daniel?”
“We don’t know.”
Nathan stood.
“But I know what I did.”
Everyone looked at him.
“I betrayed my wife.”
Claire, watching remotely from another room, closed her eyes.
Nathan continued.
“I exercised terrible judgment.”
He did not make excuses.
“I will accept whatever personal consequences come from that.”
Then his voice hardened.
“But Daniel used my misconduct to cover a coordinated attempt to steal company funds and manipulate family ownership.”
The board delayed Monday’s leadership vote.
Daniel had expected Nathan to hide.
Instead Nathan confessed.
That weakened the weapon.
But Daniel still had one more card.
At 4:20 p.m., a second video appeared.
This one featured Vanessa.
She sat in a dim room.
No visible location.
Her face looked tired.
Her eyes were swollen.
She spoke directly into the camera.
“Nathan forced me to pretend I was pregnant.”
Nathan stared at the screen.
Vanessa continued.
“He wanted sympathy during his divorce.”
Claire whispered, “She’s reversing it.”
Vanessa claimed Nathan created the entire scheme.
She said Ethan discovered the prosthetic belly because Nathan’s family had stopped cooperating.
Then she delivered the most dangerous lie yet.
“Nathan promised me five million dollars to take the blame.”
The video ended.
Nathan’s attorney swore under his breath.
Ethan watched from the doorway.
Nathan turned.
“How long have you been there?”
“Long enough.”
Nathan rubbed his face.
“She’s trying to make it look like I planned everything.”
Ethan stepped inside.
“But you didn’t.”
“People believe evidence, not children defending their fathers.”
Ethan placed his phone on the desk.
“Then give them evidence.”
He played an audio recording.
Vanessa’s voice filled the room.
WHATEVER YOU THINK YOU SAW, STAY OUT OF IT.
Then another section.
YOUR FATHER IS UNDER ENORMOUS PRESSURE.
Then Ethan’s voice.
WHY?
Vanessa replied.
BECAUSE ADULTS MAKE COMPLICATED DECISIONS.
Nathan stared.
“You recorded her?”
Ethan nodded.
“The night she came to my bedroom.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I forgot.”
Nathan almost laughed.
The recording did not prove the entire conspiracy.
But it proved Vanessa had confronted Ethan privately before Nathan knew about the fake pregnancy.
Her new story began to collapse.
Nathan looked at his son.

Once again, Ethan had noticed what everyone else missed.
Once again, he had kept the thing that mattered.
