Chapter 16 - DANIEL'S LAST OFFER

Daniel surrendered without resistance.

That surprised everyone.

He sat at the kitchen table with both hands visible while officers entered.

He smiled.

“About time.”

When investigators questioned him, Daniel asked for Nathan.

They refused.

Daniel offered information in exchange for a meeting.

Nathan’s attorney advised against it.

Nathan agreed.

Then Daniel sent a message through his lawyer.

ASK NATHAN WHAT VANESSA HAS ON ETHAN.

Nathan changed his mind.

The meeting took place behind glass at the county detention center.

Daniel looked tired but amused.

“You look terrible.”

Nathan sat down.

“What does Vanessa have on Ethan?”

Daniel smiled.

“No hello?”

Nathan stared at him.

Daniel leaned back.

“You always were impatient.”

“What does she have?”

“Insurance.”

Nathan’s pulse quickened.

“What kind?”

“Videos.”

“Of what?”

“Ethan following her.”

Nathan’s expression hardened.

“He followed her because she was lying.”

“I know.”

“But edited correctly, it looks different.”

Nathan leaned forward.

“Where are they?”

“With Vanessa.”

“What does she want?”

“Protection.”

“From prosecution?”

“From me.”

Nathan frowned.

Daniel smiled again.

“You still think Vanessa and I are partners.”

“You recruited her.”

“Yes.”

“You paid her.”

“Yes.”

“You planned the pregnancy.”

“Yes.”

“Then what changed?”

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

“She became ambitious.”

Nathan said nothing.

Daniel continued.

“The original plan was simple.”

He spoke as though discussing a business transaction.

“Vanessa gets close to you.”

“You sleep with her.”

“She announces a pregnancy.”

“You acknowledge paternity.”

“The temporary trust interest shifts.”

“The board balance changes.”

“I take control.”

“Then what?”

“She suffers a tragic miscarriage.”

Nathan stared through the glass.

“There was never supposed to be a baby.”

“No.”

“What about the infant photograph?”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“That was Vanessa.”

Nathan understood.

Vanessa had expanded the scheme.

She wanted permanent money.

Not temporary leverage.

Daniel continued.

“She realized a living heir would give her decades of access to Caldwell assets.”

“So she started planning to produce a baby.”

“Yes.”

“Without telling you.”

“Yes.”

“Lucas?”

“He knew parts.”

“Mercer?”

“He worked for money.”

Nathan looked at Daniel with disgust.

“You destroyed this family because you wanted my chair.”

Daniel laughed.

“You destroyed your family.”

Nathan went still.

Daniel leaned forward.

“I merely noticed the crack.”

The words hit hard because they were partly true.

Daniel continued.

“Vanessa didn’t force you into that hotel room.”

Nathan said nothing.

“She didn’t make you lie to Claire.”

Nathan stayed silent.

Daniel smiled.

“That’s what bothers you most, isn’t it?”

Nathan stood.

Daniel called after him.

“You haven’t asked the important question.”

Nathan stopped.

“Where is Vanessa?”

Daniel leaned closer to the glass.

“With the only thing she still thinks can save her.”

“What?”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“The original trust amendment.”

Nathan returned to the chair.

“What amendment?”

Daniel smiled faintly.

“The one your grandfather actually signed.”

Nathan stared.

May you like

Daniel lowered his voice.

“And if Vanessa understands what it says, forty-two million dollars is going to be the least of your problems.”
