Chapter 14 - VANESSA MAKES A MISTAKE

The audio recording changed the public narrative.
Not completely.
But enough.
Vanessa had claimed Nathan directed the deception.
Ethan’s recording showed her privately pressuring him to ignore suspicious evidence before Nathan knew the truth.
Then Melissa released her own statement through an attorney.
She admitted buying the prosthetic belly for Vanessa.
She admitted receiving money.
She admitted seeing Vanessa communicate with Daniel.
Within hours, Vanessa’s credibility weakened.
That was when she made her biggest mistake.
She called Claire.
Claire was sitting alone in the kitchen.
Nathan and Ethan were upstairs with investigators.
The number was blocked.
Claire answered anyway.
“Hello?”
Vanessa spoke quietly.
“You ruined this.”
Claire felt no fear.
“Interesting choice of words.”
“You turned Nathan against me.”
“No.”
Claire looked toward the security camera near the ceiling.
“You did that yourself.”
Vanessa laughed.
“Do you really think he wants you?”
Claire said nothing.
“He chose me.”
Claire answered calmly.
“He slept with you.”
“That’s the same thing.”
“No.”
Claire’s voice sharpened.
“It isn’t.”
Vanessa went silent.
Claire continued.
“Nathan betrayed me.”
She swallowed.
“But betrayal is not love.”
Vanessa’s breathing became heavier.
“You always looked down on me.”
“I barely knew you.”
“You had everything.”
“And you thought stealing it would make it yours.”
“You don’t understand.”
“Then explain.”
Claire intentionally kept her talking.
Upstairs, Nathan received a message from the security team.
TRACE IN PROGRESS.
He rushed downstairs silently.
Claire put the phone on speaker.
Vanessa continued.
“Daniel said Nathan would never notice me unless I gave him what you stopped giving him.”
Claire’s eyes shifted toward Nathan.
“What was that?”
“Admiration.”
Nathan closed his eyes.
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“He was so easy.”
Nathan flinched.
“You want to know the saddest part?”
Claire did not answer.
“He talked about you constantly.”
Nathan looked up.
Vanessa continued.
“Even when he was with me.”
Claire’s face remained still.
“He complained about you.”
“He missed you.”
“He hated you.”
“He loved you.”
Every sentence sounded contradictory.
That was exactly what Nathan had been.
Angry.
Lonely.
Resentful.
Still attached.
Vanessa continued.
“Daniel told me it would take six weeks.”
Claire asked, “Six weeks for what?”
Vanessa stopped.
Nathan held his breath.
Claire repeated, “Six weeks for what?”
Vanessa realized her mistake.
The line went dead.
Nathan stared at the phone.
The trace had failed.
But Vanessa had confirmed Daniel recruited her.
And she had given them something else.
Six weeks.
Ethan came downstairs.
“What happened six weeks after she met Dad?”
Nathan thought.
Then his face changed.
“The shareholder filing.”
He rushed toward the office.
Six weeks after his first meeting with Vanessa, Daniel quietly purchased additional Caldwell Group shares through a holding company.
Not enough to attract attention.
But combined with the proposed trust redistribution, it would have given Daniel voting control.
The timeline proved premeditation.
Vanessa had approached Nathan after Daniel’s financial plan was already underway.
The affair had never been spontaneous.
The pregnancy had never been an accident.
Nathan had been targeted.
But Claire still looked at him differently.
“You were targeted,” she said.
Nathan nodded.
“And you still made a choice.”
He met her eyes.
“Yes.”
May you like
For the first time, there was no argument between them.
Only truth.
