Chapter 7 - THE FORTY-TWO-MILLION-DOLLAR BABY

Nathan spent the rest of the day with lawyers.
By evening, the picture had become worse.
The Caldwell family trust had been written by Nathan’s grandfather nearly thirty years earlier.
Its language was outdated but specific.
Each legally recognized biological child of Nathan would become a beneficiary.
During pregnancy, a temporary prenatal interest could be created for estate planning purposes if Nathan acknowledged paternity.
Vanessa had repeatedly asked Nathan to sign prenatal documents.
She told him they were for insurance.
He had refused only because Claire’s attorney advised him not to sign anything during the separation.
That decision might have saved millions.
But it did not explain how Vanessa knew the trust existed.
The document was private.
Only family members, lawyers, and a small number of financial employees knew its details.
Nathan sat in his office surrounded by printed records.
Ethan stood near the window.
Claire leaned against the bookshelf.
“She had help,” Ethan said.
Nathan nodded.
“Yes.”
Claire looked at him.
“Who knew about the clause?”
“My mother.”
“Your brother?”
“Daniel knows the trust exists.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
Nathan hesitated.
“Yes.”
Ethan turned.
“Uncle Daniel?”
Nathan’s younger brother had spent most of his adult life resenting Nathan.
Their grandfather had placed Nathan in charge of the family construction company.
Daniel received money from the trust but no controlling authority.
For years, Daniel claimed he did not care.
Nobody believed him.
Claire shook her head.
“Vanessa knows Daniel.”
Nathan looked surprised.
“How?”
“I saw them talking at the Christmas gala last year.”
“Before the affair?”
“Yes.”
Nathan stood.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because people talk at parties.”
Ethan opened his laptop.
His repaired computer had been returned that afternoon.
The technician said someone had deliberately corrupted the operating system.
No hardware failure.
No accident.
Ethan opened old Christmas photographs.
He searched until he found one taken near the hotel bar.
Vanessa stood in the background.
Beside her was Daniel.
They were not casually talking.
Daniel was holding Vanessa’s elbow.
She was leaning close to him.
Ethan enlarged the image.
Nathan stared.
Claire whispered, “There.”
Nathan’s jaw tightened.
Then Ethan noticed another detail.
A man stood near Daniel.
Lucas Grant.
Nathan’s chief financial officer.
Nathan moved closer.
“No.”
Ethan looked at him.
“You know him?”
“Lucas has access to the trust planning documents.”
Claire’s face hardened.
“And your company accounts.”
Nathan immediately called corporate security.
Within two hours, a confidential audit began.
Nobody contacted Daniel.
Nobody contacted Lucas.
Nathan wanted them unaware.
At 9:30 p.m., Ethan was sitting alone in the kitchen when Claire entered.
“You should sleep.”
“I’m not tired.”
She sat across from him.
“You did something brave.”
“I found a pin.”
“You followed the truth.”
Ethan looked down.
“Did Dad really sleep with her?”
Claire’s expression tightened.
“Yes.”
“Are you leaving him?”
“I don’t know.”
Ethan nodded slowly.
Claire reached across the table.
“What Vanessa did does not decide what I do.”
“I know.”
“And what your father did does not change that he loves you.”
“I know.”
But Ethan’s voice sounded uncertain.
Claire squeezed his hand.
Then the security system chimed.
Someone had opened the side gate.
Nathan appeared in the doorway.
“Stay here.”
He checked the camera.
A woman stood outside.
She wore a hooded jacket and kept looking over her shoulder.
Nathan enlarged the image.
Ethan recognized her.
“Melissa.”
Vanessa’s friend.
Nathan opened the intercom.
“What do you want?”
Melissa looked directly into the camera.
“I need to talk to Ethan.”
Nathan’s expression darkened.
“Why?”
Melissa held up a black envelope.
“Because Vanessa knows he found the pin.”
May you like
Then she said the words that sent Nathan straight toward the door.
“And now she wants him blamed for everything.”
