Chapter 55 - The Core of Tartarus

"She’s heading for the Sovereign Archive," Julian Vance’s voice echoed through the tactical comms unit worn by the lead Swiss operator. "Sarah, do not let her reach Vault Zero! If Eleanor manually activates the Cold War purge sequence, the entire mountain will be sealed under five hundred feet of granite, and she will transmit the child’s incomplete ledger to an offshore server in Macau!"

Mark looked at me, his eyes burning with determination. "Can you run?"

"I’ve spent my entire life running from her," I said, wiping the sweat and grime from my brow and looking down at Clara, who had remarkably stopped crying, her wide blue eyes staring up at me with astonishing clarity. "Now, I finish it."

We moved swiftly through the red-lit subterranean corridors. Julian’s strike team pushed ahead, neutralizing Eleanor’s scattered mercenaries in brisk, tactical skirmishes that echoed like thunderclaps through the concrete tombs. The fortress was disintegrating around us; coolant pipes were bursting, filling the hallways with blinding steam and freezing mist.

At the deepest level of Project Tartarus lay Vault Zero.

The door was a massive circular vault of six-foot-thick titanium, forged in 1968. Inside, rows upon rows of magnetic tape reels and primitive mainframe supercomputers hummed alongside cutting-edge quantum terminals. In the center of this cathedral of secrets stood Eleanor, standing before an open terminal with a bleeding gash across her hairline. She was furiously typing with one hand while holding a remote detonator in the other.

"Stop right there, Sarah," Eleanor said without looking back. Her voice was cracked, stripped of all aristocratic elegance, revealing the ravenous, desperate predator beneath. "One step closer, and I trigger the charges beneath the reactor room. None of us will ever see the sunlight again."

Mark raised his weapon, but I put a hand on his arm, stepping forward alone into the circle of light.

"You won't blow this room, Eleanor," I said calmly, holding Clara in my arms. "Because if this room is destroyed, your precious name—the great, untouchable House of Montgomery—dies with it. And to a narcissist like you, being forgotten is a fate worse than death."

Eleanor slowly turned around. Her eyes were bloodshot, her impeccable sable coat torn and stained with ash. "You think you know me? You think because I didn't hold you when you were sick, or because I didn't coddle this bastard child at Christmas, that I am weak? Everything I built was for the survival of our line!"

"No," I replied, my voice steady, cutting through the hum of the cooling fans. "You built it for yourself. You despised Clara the moment she was born because you saw the one thing you could never buy, steal, or inherit."

"And what is that, you pathetic little ingrate?!" Eleanor snarled, her finger hovering over the detonator switch.

May you like

"Innocence," I said. "And a mother who would actually die for her."
