Chapter 52 - The Shadow of the Matriarch

The cold outside was like a physical blow. The moment the emergency cabin door was ripped off its hinges from the outside by two towering operatives, the sub-zero alpine air flooded our lungs.
Mark lunged forward, throwing his body in front of Clara and me, but the butt of a tactical rifle struck him squarely in the chest. He collapsed into the crushed snow, coughing blood, yet still trying to crawl toward us.
"Mark!" I cried out, stepping out of the wreckage with Clara wrapped securely beneath my heavy woolen coat.
"Don't waste your breath, Sarah," a smooth, cultured voice drifted over the crunching snow. Eleanor walked toward us with the regal posture of an empress inspecting her estate. Her manicured silver hair was immaculately styled, unaffected by the freezing wind. Her eyes, pale blue and entirely devoid of human warmth, swept over the wreckage before settling coldly on me. "I must commend your husband’s crude piloting skills. I had anticipated that the recovery team would have to dig your remains out of a glacier. This makes the transfer of assets considerably more convenient."
"You monstrous sociopath," I hissed, tightening my grip on my daughter. "The Vienna Tribunal stripped you of every title. Richter sent you to the submerged vaults! How are you standing here?"
Eleanor laughed softly, a dry, mocking sound that echoed off the granite cliffs. "Richter? Julian? The High Chamber? Sarah, you were always so hopelessly bourgeois. You honestly believed that a handful of retired diplomats and ceremonial chancellors held the actual levers of global power? Those men answer to the 1968 Covenant. And the Covenant has always belonged to me."
She raised a gloved hand, and two guards roughly hauled Mark to his feet, binding his wrists behind his back with industrial zip-ties.
"Leave him alone!" I yelled, taking a furious step forward. "Your fight is with me, Eleanor! You spent thirty years telling me I was worthless, telling everyone at that Christmas table that my child was a mistake—and now you wage a private war over her?"
"You still don't understand, do you?" Eleanor said, stepping close enough that I could smell the familiar, suffocating scent of her expensive French perfume. She reached out with a leather-clad finger to touch Clara’s cheek, but I slapped her hand away violently.
Eleanor didn't flinch. Her smile merely curled into something far more sinister. "Your father knew the truth. When the Montgomery lineage was codified in the Geneva Vaults under the 1968 charter, he didn't name me as the sovereign successor. Nor did he name you. He skipped an entire generation, Sarah. He encoded the ultimate authority over the entire transatlantic sovereign reserve into a recessive genetic marker. A marker that bypassed you... and manifested perfectly in that little girl."
My blood ran cold. The bizarre blood panels the doctors had run during my pregnancy. The constant, intrusive medical checkups Eleanor had insisted upon before cutting me off.
"She is not an asset," I snarled, tears of pure rage burning my eyes. "She is my daughter!"

"She is the key to seventy billion dollars and sovereign diplomatic immunity across forty-two nations," Eleanor whispered, her gaze hardening into flint. "And as long as she is in my custody, you and your little middle-class life no longer exist. Escort them inside. Prepare the biometric synchronization room."
