Chapter 47 - The Trial of Thorns

I stepped into the chamber alone, the weight of a thousand forgotten generations pressing down upon my shoulders. The air smelled of ozone and ancient vellum. On the pedestal, beside the platinum-chained ledger, lay a single golden signet ring bearing the Montgomery-Vance crest: an eagle soaring through an eclipse.
I reached out with a trembling hand and lifted the ring. It was cold, heavy, and undeniably real.
"You don't have to carry this alone," Mark’s voice called out from the threshold. He stood with Clara in his arms, his strong jaw set with determination. "If this world thinks they can use our daughter as an asset, they will have to go through both of us."
"Mark," I whispered, tears of relief and exhaustion finally welling in my eyes. "She wanted to destroy us. Eleanor wanted to make me feel small, weak, and pathetic. She wanted to prove to everyone that I would never amount to anything."
"She lost because she underestimated love," Mark said simply, stepping forward and kissing my forehead. "She only understood fear."
I slipped the golden signet ring onto my thumb. Instantly, the amber lights in the vault flared to a brilliant, incandescent white. The platinum chains around the Black Ledger unlocked with a series of heavy mechanical clicks, sliding away like discarded snakes.
On the pedestal’s integrated display screen, a vast data stream began to scroll at blinding speed: corporate registries, sovereign debt bonds, private estate deeds stretching from Manhattan to Monaco, and legal immunities recognized by thirty-eight sovereign nations.
Every single penny, every single title, every single deed was now registered under two names: *Sarah Vance Davis and Clara Vance Davis.*
Arch-Chancellor Richter stepped into the light, his head bowed in absolute reverence. "The succession is sealed. The High Chamber acknowledges Lady Sarah as Sovereign Custodian of the Vance-Montgomery Trust. Julian’s faction has been disarmed, and Eleanor’s name has been expunged from the family records forever."
For the first time in weeks, the crushing suffocating terror in my chest began to dissolve. We had survived the snowstorm. We had survived Julian's assault. We had survived Eleanor's poisoned tongue and her legal ambush.

"We are going home," I told Richter firmly. "We are going back to Colorado. We will build a life where Clara grows up knowing love, warmth, and peace—not iron vaults and ancient grudges."
"As you command, Lady Sarah," Richter replied politely. "A transport has been fueled on the lower runway to take you back across the Atlantic. Your reign begins today."
