Chapter 34 - The Treason of Arthur

We supported Arthur as he dragged his trembling feet into the grand library. Mark held his right arm, I held his left, his ebony cane clicking weakly against the parquet floor.

Julian sat comfortably in my grandfather’s antique armchair behind the massive mahogany desk, sipping from a glass of vintage scotch he had poured himself from the sideboard.

"Arthur," Julian said softly, raising his glass in a mockery of a toast. "You look remarkably old for a man who stole thirty million dollars and an entire family's legacy."

Arthur stopped, his breathing shallow, his hollow eyes staring at Julian with a mixture of hatred and profound despair. "You were supposed to be dead, Vance. The boat in Trieste... it was destroyed."

"A minor theatrical performance to divert the Italian authorities," Julian said dismissively. "You ran to America. You convinced Eleanor to marry that pathetic fool Montgomery to give yourself cover. And then, when Eleanor became too greedy, too unstable, you groomed her daughter to take the mantle."

Julian leaned forward, setting the crystal glass down with a sharp *clack*.

"Tell her, Arthur. Tell the girl the truth about her heroic guardian angel."

I turned my head to look at Arthur. His face had completely crumpled, tears carving clean lines through the dust on his weathered cheeks. "Arthur... what does he mean?"

"Sarah..." Arthur whispered, his voice trembling so violently he could hardly form the syllables. "Your grandfather... he didn't name me your protector out of love. I was the accountant for the Vienna syndicate."

The room seemed to tilt on its axis.

"I was the one who drafted the Accord," Arthur choked out, unable to meet my eyes. "In 1968, when the syndicate threatened to liquidate our entire branch, your grandfather offered a deal. We pledged the Black Ridge mountain, the land, and the future inheritance as collateral for forty years of non-interference. But the collateral had a maturity date. Christmas Eve, this year."

"The date Eleanor tried to hold the auction," I gasped, the puzzle pieces clicking together in a horrific pattern.

"Eleanor was running out of time!" Arthur wept. "She wasn't trying to steal the estate from you out of sheer cruelty—she was trying to sell the assets before Julian’s people arrived to seize everything! She wanted the cash to flee to South America! And I... I used you, Sarah. I used your legal claim to lock Eleanor out, hoping the American courts would create a wall strong enough to stop the Directorate!"

"You used my baby as a shield," Mark said, his voice dropping into a guttural, terrifying fury. He took a menacing step toward the old man, his fists clenching so hard his knuckles turned stark white. "You brought this hell to our daughter's doorstep!"

"I had no choice!" Arthur cried, collapsing into a chair, burying his face in his hands. "If the Directorate takes the ledger, they don't just take the land. The ledger contains the real names of the Directorate’s founders. If Julian gets it, he liquidates every living descendant of the Montgomery line to wipe out the legal challenge forever!"

Julian chuckled softly, applauding with slow, rhythmic claps. "Bravo, Arthur. A remarkably honest confession at the threshold of death. Now, where is the key to the cistern vault?"
